Sebo duo or envirodri?
« on: December 05, 2009, 07:29:46 am »
I need an agitator, for the sake of my back!
Could i get this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300360316526&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123 and use it as a pre spray agitator and a dry sponge method? Or would the sebo be sufficant enough to use on the host sponges?

You start by saying you want an agitator because of your bad back, then say you want to use sponges.

If you were using the machine as an agitator the Duo could work for you but the Envirodri is much better - it has more weight and bigger brushes - digs deeper.

If you want to use sponges then go for the Envirodri because of the same reasons as above.

To clean carpets you do need a lot of sponges. YOUR costs go up so you need to charge more then say HWE. Your advertising will have to appeal to really green customers and those that want dry carpets byt the time you leave.

2 machine in that ebay picture - I think the E30 is the smaller one ie 12", the larger one will be the E40 - 16". If you large areas to do - size will matter.

Its not bad, YET ::), but my god you feel it by the end of a long day cleaning! An agitator just seems a sensible investment.
The envirodri seems like i could kill two birds with one stone?

Joe- Never used sponge method, is it more labour intensive on the back then? Seen it used a couple of times, but havnt had a go myself?

With sponges, like other cleans, you really need to give it a good go with a vac cleaner ie Sebo BS36, to get rid of all the loose bits.
The sponges are easy to apply, scatter by hand, or there is a machine to do it (bit like a garden grass seed distributor). You agitate these in (hence the machine), wait 30 minutes, then when dry you vac out - or as much as you can.
Very dirty carpets may need a 2nd application, and you can apply a prespray (lightly) to help break up the sticky soiling (microsplitters ok as is MPower/Nemesis).
I have done the odd job with sponges but prefer to how water extract - but if your back gonna play up it may be good for you.
Sponges are woolsafe.
If you target the high end market it may prove lucrative, but you do need a lot of sponges and the price per sq yd will be high - hence you charge a premium.
A new Envirodri costs about £1000, Host have brought a model onto the market at about the same price.
You can get different brushes (2 in a set) for different type of pile. Envirodri costs about £90, Host about £180 a pair.

Higher end models of Host have a vac pod sat on top of the brush machine, doing away with a seperate vac, and Restormate does a Flexi 5 also with a vac pod considerably cheaper then a Host (or used to be cheaper - bit out of touch with prices.)

I've had a GEN4 Envirodri about 6 months, got a ex-demo really cheap from the factory, but I've never exercised the machine that much really.  As a person who I believe has used this, or similar machines, can you give me some idea of what level of success (even with multiple applications) I might expect from a 'dirtier' carpet.  Having used HWE for 8 years I know what I can get with this.

I have done less then an handful with sponges, and I picked what carpets I used them on ie cleaner ones ;)
Martin_606 is the "king" of sponges, hes done a lot of end of tenancy with sponges and apparantly gets good results.
Think he does use microsplitters as a prespray but you musnt put too much down or the sponges cant soak it all up.
Best thing is to try it.

Thanks for this.  I believe you told me about the over application of the pre-spray a while back and the mess this can create for the vacuuming up - it does.  Anyhow, I guess I'll need to try things out over a variety of carpets.  I've still got half a tub of sponges to play with.

Another option you may want to consider is using a Rotovac Power Wand. I use mine on all but low profile (Polyprop) carpets. You are in an upright position when using the wand so there is no bending as with a manual scrub wand. I also use mine to agitate. More expensive I know but, when used in conjunction with my Alltec triple Vac, I get truck mount like performance (If not the speed)

£20 carpet brush does it for me.
Used to use Powerbrush for agitation but got fed up of
lugging it about.
Takes longer too.
Just grab brush and away you go even up to the edges.

I have the new gen 4 envirodri machine never not used a machine for agitation, it really breaks the dirt down making extraction easier i have three sets of brushes for it and the added benefit is you can offer dry cleaning too, it is heavy but you get used to the weight the only thing i would mention is that you should always use in a inconspicous area first as the brushes can damage the carpet even the ones that say fine for shagplie etc it really is just a guide, i have never used the sebo duo so dont know how effective it is but the envirodri is a worthwhile investment
