Im moving house (50 miles) what to do ?
« on: December 01, 2009, 07:11:00 am »
Ok, so its been decided that were moving house. Was something that was a thought, but turned into reality from a phonecall yesterday. We have got places at a VERY good school and cant afford to miss this opportunity for them.

Were Moving from Stafford to Wostershire (around 50 miles / 60 min trip back to Stafford)

My wife and I have put ALOT of work into the business since we started in April this year. My wife went door knocking for 4 months to get the business where we are today.

Im really split on wether to...

1) sell up and start again. I wouldnt have my wifes help as her business has really taken off and i cant knock doors.

2) travel back each day - looking at an extra £60 a week in fuel and about 2 hours traveling each day

3) sell off parts and build up some work in the new area

Can i have your thoughts please people. Sure someone will make sense of all this and come up with a solution so i will make my mind up.

I didnt sleep right last night and hope its not to do with this

I think it all depeds how good your business is at the moment. If your earning a good wage and the round is solid and not full of pita custies, then a 50 mile comute may be worth it. Loads of folk will travel that distance each day to get to there work, although a pain and not ideal it's not the end of the world.

Also it may be worth your while in employing someone to work with you and in time buil up work near your new home and when the time comes you can do the round in your new area and pay an employee to do your current round.

As for selling your round that may be tricky as it's not that well established yet.

As your wife helped build your business up couldn't you recipricate the gesture and help her maybe. Are you in a position to sell and do this,if so i would do that and when you feel you want to rebuild in the area that you are moving to.
Good luck whichever way you go.  :)

How about starting to change over gradually. Do it with leaflets in your new area and let it build up over time. Then as the work builds in the new area let an eqivilent amount go in the old area. If you keep the best paying jobs till last it will be worth the drive back. Or gradually put up some of your prices in your old area for the same reason.

Window wipers since you only started up in April this year (therefore I would be surprised if the work was brilliant; but I could be wrong), I'd probably sell or bin the old round and start afresh, taking with you the knowledge and experience that you've gained so far; hopefully building up a new and better work.

But whether I could do that or not would depend on my finances.  Would I have time to do that before the balifs moved in?

For me that would be the basis to make my decision on.

I agree with Tosh on this, if you can sell for more than x5 the value you have 5-6 months to build up. Take the knowledge with you and start again with a higher value. If you wifes business is doing well support that. You could employ a canvasser if you dont want to knock doors.

Whatever you do think it through. And dont decide in haste.
All the best in whatever you decide.

i would do it gradual as said above . just set 1 day a week aside to tout for work in your new town.  i myself moved a few months back and  im doing that, though i reckon im going to keep commuting as i  like the variety and maybe one day it might be raining in your new town but dry in your old place  so you can keep working

Did you go to Worcester to look at houses first, or did you register your kids at the school first , then look at houses.
Seems a lot of trouble to me just for a so called "very good school" surely there are some good ones local to you ???

You'll be £60 a week short if you move and carry on working your round due to fuel costs and a 2 hour commute means you won't see a lot of your kids anyway :(

Starting again with just flyers will take a while to build up again

Not being too negative just outlining the problems ;D

just be firm with the wife and say no!we are staying put!surely all the schools round where u live are not all bad are they?it doesnt mean the kids are going to be high school drop outs (like me!) ;D.if uv lived in an area for a few years what about your kids friends?displacing kids a lot can give them more problems than some so called better school miles away!!uv worked hard for 9 months building a round.why should u just get up and move just as ur getting established?unless its to move near family and friends etc.
price higher/work harder!

Depending on the amount you have could you not sell some as you said and use that to buy where your moving to ?

When are you wanting to move is this quick or by summer next year ?

is hard to sell right now so if possible hold out till feb march maybe :-\

Thanks for the replys guys

We decided to move closer to friends and family. The school is the best one in the area we wanted to move to. We went on the waiting list which can take up to two years to get a place. Just has come quicker.

Were moving in mid march.

My wifes business isn't something I could do as I have already tried it.

Think I will have to sort my jobs out, keep a few days and sell off the rest.
Tosh... I've got some underpriced looking at it, but average is about £25 an hour over the month

I think if you market it properly now would be a very good time to sell.  The fact that there are thousands of new window cleaners about means many people are losing their jobs and in need of a new income stream.

A ready made job with a good income would be on all their Christmas wish lists ;)
