I used to use laddermats for this sort of stuff; google for them.  I've never used spikes, so I can't really comment on their suitability.

if you can drive up to the windows in question i would use your van as a ladder support put your ladder against one of your van tyresi know its a bit tricky on pavers best to safe then sorry mate!!!

Jakal, just make sure you don't take any risks.  If you feel unsafe, you probably are.  There's nothing wrong with missing 'dodgy windows' and knocking a pro-rata amount off from the price of the clean.

Also be extremely cautious with decking at this time of year; its like an ice rink.

Is it short duration work with no practicable alternative method of cleaning?

Could you use a trad pole instead?

get yourself a wfpole and  omnipole backpack just to do the tops got mine from ebay cheap you will never look back!!just easier in the long run total cost £400

Tosh, laddermats are lethal with anything but dry tarmac. I've had one of the worst ladders slips with them on slippery ground.

nearly had an expensive accident using those on a internal conny roof clean.

I was told the safe use of ladders, your chest shouldn't be higher than the top rung.
May of been ill informed.

you should always maintain 3 points of contact and not be stood on the top 2 rungs.

so really the stiles/rungs should be available to grasp to keep that 3 points of contact at all times - so that depends on how long your arms are   Great if your an ladder orang-utan!

so you have also used spikes for sloped drives aswell jonnyald?, as for other comments i no you should do everything possible to stay safe but when your just starting out its hard to find the cash for some extras like the wfp and would like buy the limpets as they look a really good safety feature but again need make some money first

jackal,  my spikes are never taken off my ladder and iv used them on green decking . they dig into the wood a bit but hey so what .

 if your  blockpaving has a groove between the blocks thats where id put the spikes  . i cant remember sloping block paving but i do rtemember a pathway that sloped made of black and white floor tiles and i had no problem  . fits your spikes tomoro and try em out   jackal

spikes will be great but if unsure put your ladder in the corner of the window theen the 2 stiles arnt both facing down the slope but are across it so you are safer

if in doubt i use a trad pole.i do have a rojak i use sometimes.better safe than sorry.i use the pole a lot in winter due to mossy/wet surfaces.
