CRB or just Reference check?
« on: November 19, 2009, 07:17:21 pm »
Hi when employing staff, I mainly do domestic work, do you go the full hog and CRB check or just reference check people?  And if you do CRB check, how much does this cost and how long does it take? and who's to say they have committed a crime but have got away with it and do not have a record.

Just wondered what route you guys take!!

i only really cover commercial cleaning but i only carry out CRB checks with my staff that work in schools, these are the enhanced ones and cost me about £45 each...and can take months !!! you can do a disclosure of scotland which you will get back in about 1 week and costs £23 aprox, but only covers issues within the last few years, spent issues will not show....like you say though, you may take on a bad egg but they just have not been caught.

I think if it was me i would get references from previous employers and ensure my insurance covered me incase of theft etc.....hope this helps...xx

Thanks HSO, I think I will stick with reference checks and just keep everything x

iirc you can't crb check soeone without a reason, and just because they are cleaning an empty house isn't reason enough afaik. i could be wrong though as you could claim that there is chance they may work in house with children there e.g. over school holidays, or even cover for people on holiday in schools.

procrb is who i plan to use for my next check if they ever call me back at they charge £44 per enhanced check which is fairly competitive.

what i don't get is what happens if the employee comits a crime after the crb check? i'm sure they should tell you but then surely it's the same for before employing, if they have ay convictions they should tell you?
