ive jus been called in to restretch the carpet in a huge chinese restaurant in liverpool.last night it was cleaned (not by me!) and today it is approx 2-3 inches shorter in the length.

to add to the problem it is soaking wet everywhere!!!!

because the custy was not advised of shrinkage, and told it would take 3-4 hrs to dry completely.. ive told the custy to speak with the cleaner as regards shrinkage/levels of moisture in the carpet.

has this ever happened to anybody else:
 1.shrinkage by such a large amount.
 2.complaints about soaking wet carpet

and how was it resolved?

i wouldve thought simply advising of shrinkage is enough to cover your back..
and leaving the air movers with the custy would have been a great help

I thought you have to wait till dry before stretching it otherwise you could cause damage.

Been there, seen it all before---- Leave them to it. you're on a loser, it will split unless bone dry then you need a GOOD powerstretcher and loads of luck for any degree of sucess.

They probably paid cheap and got cheap, serves them right. Theres no free lunch they got what they paid for, if they wanted something better they should have been more selective and paid the extra for a true pro. Chances are that whoever did it hasnt got products liabilty cover either, so it will cost them more in the end.

Last year I got called out to a rather posh country hotel where a pipe had leaked all night. When I got there at 10am the shrinkage had started by coming off the grippers. As fast as we worked (2 machines) by 3pm it had shrunk a good 2 inches further. I told them to get hold of a carpet fitter but I did suspect that the only remedy was to fit a new strip or fit some form of wooden batten to hide the gap. I left it to them to decide, it wasn't my problem.

Needs a few days for it to relax, I have known them go back to correect size but to be fare I would check for grippers as if they have bought a cheap carpet and had a cheap cleaner it says to me that thye will have not paid for grippers and underlay so there may be knowhere to stretch the carpet to.

Not all Chinese are cheap buyers they do have standards I think it;s because we haven't sold our services properly.

It always makes me laugh when I read a quote like this, just like it makes me laugh when people say Indian restaurant owners are a nightmare to get cash out of. 

Don't tar everyone with the same brush.  Would you say all Scotsmen are tight? I hope not, it's a common misconception

all i am going off is my own experiences, i know a few chinese people and they all own chip shops and always go with the cheapest they can find,  i didnt mean to offend any one, i am sorry if i did

I get many calls from Asian people mainly Indian or Pakistani.
 

a] They want cheap as in the case  2 days ago - quote £120, woman asks
do you think you could do it for £50.

or

b] Today - 2 beds and lounge, whilst doing it says could you do HSL
while your here, I say I'm pushing it for time but yes, he says good I'll
give you an extra fiver it won't take you long, I say forget it I'm away.

or

c] While your set up could you do the dining room as well, yes that will be £x,
but it won't take you a minute now your here, it will be that price yes or no?
Usually no.

There are some who I have worked for who have been fine but mainly they're
a pain in the ass.
A lot of the properties they send me to are council house rentals that they own
so you can imagine the state. The one I did today I wouldn't of even dreamed
of having them cleaned they where that trashed but I put high prices in when
I hear the accent and if they accept, bingo.

It's true that they want the best for their money I hate customers that when I come to their not so clean home expect too much and you clean 99% of the poo up and then argue the fact that there is one small spot left or the pile hasn't fully lifted.

Do you find it a hard sell in your area then

Yes sometimes with the Asian community.
Some aren't bothered about the price but
then tend to hassle you for extra work for
free or just an extra fiver.
If I think there just shopping I bang the price up
a bit then if I do get it bingo.
