any one clean primary schools????
« on: November 16, 2009, 12:13:43 am »
iv got an advert in a local advertising magazine that my friend runs that goes out to thousands of schools in the district hes printed the database for me too with names and numbers of persons to contact so i can follow up the advert asking if theyd seen our advert etc and pitch them the sales blag!!

what sort of things would be best to put in a portfolio when goin round maybe to give quotes what to schools tend to ask for if anyone else has experience dealing with them i.e risk assesment, method statements etc etc

cheers guys

it really depends becuase in some cases teh local council have the window cleaning done as part of a big council cleaning contract and in some districts they have there own budget for cleaning, so just ring and found out

in cases where they have there own budget you will find many want cut price and dont care  much about standards

im siure there are exceptions but this is what ive seen, as they only get cleaned 2, 3 , 4 times a year

first and foremost youwill need a CRB check for clearance,  you will also need public liability insurance and if you have people working with you then they need to be CRB checked as well and you will need employers liability insurance for them.

and the risk assesment and method statement as you pointed out as well.

if you have all those in place then its all down to your sales pitch,             however its always worth letting them know how flexable you  can be as a lot of schools request the cleaning out of school hours and at weekends.

I actually picked up a great little job and the head mistress told me the other w/c who went to quote clearly stated he wouldn't work sundays to do the job so now I do it.  £360 per clean 5-6 hours work.

good luck mate and let us know how you get on

I Also imagine less schools will have it done now with a recession and there budget. think it was something like every 3/4 years round here some years back.

i can only speak from what ive done.

i think going direct to the schools is a waste of time.

a regualr mag may work but normally its done to the local council, with rubbish budgets.

windows i do have to be done during the six weeks summer hols, as does all the other work the schools have done.

prob is you have to wait a while to get paid! if thats good for you then i guess the mag wont do any harm.

lucky you i have to wait for the stupid school admin staff to come back from summer hols to sign off aload of crappy paper work before the council even get it.

we have to do 4 infants schools and 6 primary schools.

but like i said i can only speak from what ive done.

a lot of schools have there won budget, they get XXXX amount of money per pupil,  the reason i know is of my misses friends is a teacher and they could only afford to pay her part time, so thats all she works

a lot of schools will use the same people for years, thats why it can be hard to get in on them, and only come up for a new person, when someone else takes over or there budget shrinks

like in any other career, i am wary of a contract that comes up that has been with the same people for years, yet they dont want to do it this time,  tesco is a prime example  as the contracters cant wait to get out of the contracts with them, as they are a pain

I have only cleaned one primary school so far, but they want me back each year, so that's good.
All they asked me for was if I had public liability insurance.  It's not expensive, for £2 million cover.
It was in the summer holidays, so maybe that's why no CRB requirement.
I was paid by cheque when I finished the job.

I do about 25 schools, mostly primary schools, but the one senior school I do asked for £10 million cover, this school i sub contract from a bigger company so it is not my insurance. Was told this about 18months ago. Apparantly all trades visiting that school have to have £10 million cover or don't bother turning up, my own cover is only £5 million

I've looked into it on the Wirral mate and one of the local cleaning firms does them all. They have about 3 trailer systems and a van mount as far as I know and about 15 window cleaners on their books.

I would refuse to clean them during school hours, due to H&S reasons.
