unlucky mate, what surface was the ladder on a little tip for the future if in any doubt ladder will slip put a damp scrim under the feet it works better than rubber feet or most anti slip devices and is good for any surface.
 hope you get well soon

oh dave one more thing i am having a small break in cornwall with the family for a week where would you recomend visiting.
Thanks

Sorry to hear that Dave, I slipped off my doorstep just before xmas, the same doorstep I have used numerous times everyday for 9 years (3 cracked ribs).
Anyway and a perfect chance to air this one,
I hate A frames to me they have never seemed safe, 4 points of contact from a normal ladder is much better than 3 with the A frame, sorry but it's just logical.
The same rule applies when you just need that few feet of aided height to reach something....use a step ladder, 4 four points of contact on the ground and a flat ledge to stand on at the top if needed.

Unlucky dave. I have loads of sympathy for you in breaking your shoulder.
Very painful. Apart from back, neck or hip, the shoulder has got to be one of the worst for us to break.
Don't be tempted to get back on the tools to early.

Easy done in a moment of loss of concentration. I stood on a rotating gas lift office chair once (on castors) with the inevitable result.  ::)
I was reaching for a ball of paper that was thrown at my head and landed on the lights above my printing press. Guy on the next machine suffered the most - nearly choked laughing so much and was crying for at least an hour with aching ribs afterwards. Luckily I just bounced somehow.
