CIU server
« on: November 07, 2009, 12:27:46 am »
Is it possible to move this forum, complete with everything on it to another server, lock stock etc?. It seems that every time someone posts and I want to answer, some old biddy in Blackburn picks up the phone to talk to her grandkids, and the whole thing crashes ???

We put a bloke on the bloody moon for gods sake, how about being able to post on here without worrying about if some pensioner is putting the kettle on at the same time in Blackburn?

I post on a football forum from time to time and they had a similar problem of not being able to cope with the amount of users. They moved to another larger(and more expensive) server, with the result all forum members had to pay £10 to help pay for the hosting fees.

Not sure we want to go down that route ?

If you have to pay to access the forum the management would lose the right to ban people, me included  ;D

There are still rules, but it does make the issue of banning a bit more contentious.

This is a busy forum, but still any half decent hosting service should provide the required processing power and bandwidth easily, and at no extra expense.

The fault may be with the forum software (SMF 1.0 RC1) which is about 8 years old and has never been upgraded,..

there are more and more faults with the forum software, for one the older version does not like the new versions of MS ie

This is the "Release Candidate 1" software,.. not even the official SMF 1.0!!

Forum software is free. Personally I prefer the YaBB powered forums.

Nice point, but all other pages load fast, so therefor it must be CIU. For those who haven't seen it crash, just ask Matt Bateman. By the way, even if we do have to pay, Matt should still be banned ;D

the problem imho is likely to be CIU is on a shared server , the shared server could have got busier and might now be hosting another busy forum that is UK based, thus the server is trying to cope with too much
