well done on making the video iam sure it will get you more work. but i think a vac would have done a better job, why scoop it out to chuck it on the floor to then have to pick it up again. then anything you miss you wash it away into the downpipes?  :o.  for me its a vac and camera job then nothing gets missed first time, and theres nothing to scrape of the floor afterwards.
iam not trying to pick fault. just saying there might be a better way to do it. ;D

I have CCTV system and the cleaning up takes minutes but answer me this? why have 2 seperate machines to do the complete Job or even 3 machines if you carry your own generator and a vac that can cost £1000 when a cheap scoop and a brush can still do an excellent Job and how on earth can to clean the external sections with a VAC??? Like I say whay have 2/3 seperate machines when One does both Jobs.

A vac will clean everything out but again it won't wash the internal sections so they are spotless will it????

I've been using this method for over 18 months and I have plenty of Jobs already booked in.  ;)

I know your not knocking me Mark  ;)
I often see posts about the vacs and how good they are but I have never offered Just a gutter clean out service and in all the years I have never been asked to do one, so for the life of me I can't see why I would benefit from owning a vac, My son-in-law works for a hire center and has even offered me one at a very good price but like I say I can't justify owning a vac when it only cleans the muck from the internals and I need to clean the external sections to.

Like you say as long as we all make money and we all enjoy using our own methods then were all happy  ;)

I've never seen a video using this method and I often have emails and phone calls asking how do you clean with this equipment? so this week I made a video recording in the hope it will help a few members make their minds up if they would like to use the telescopic lance for gutter cleaning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsmF7EN2FpU

any close up shots of the actual scoop you have made? i'd like to try this

This is about the only close up I have

Don't try it without that bar you see if you make it from an old unger pole like I did or it will Just snap.
Hammer the tube flat apart from where you fit it to your pole.
Around 3" from the scoop end cut a slot half way through first of all then begin to flatten the sides down repeat the above cut and keep flattening it until your happy, then trim the corners of the scoop and try to create a spoon shape.

I made an attachment to slot on the end of mine so it cleans flat bottom guttering but I found it just as quick to scoop without it.

This was the first Job I used it on and discovered it needed to be stronger and another good tip I discovered on this job was to make sure its fastened to your pole lol mine got stuck under that big clump and stayed there when I brought my pole down and I spent the next 5 minutes trying to get my pole back into the end.

I just found these if they help you get the idea
How it sits inside the guttering

Try to fit your strengthening bar so as it sits on the rim of the guttering the angle of the scoop sits nicely in the guttering.

Jeff what a great video and an excellent tool you made there.
When doing houses with the lance do you ever have problems with water ingress to any air vents under the soffitts?
Do you ever use the brush to scrub the gutters/fascias etc or do you find the pressure from the lance is powerful enough after applying your cleaning solution?

Thanks Daniel  ;)
There isn't a great deal of vents on most soffits but you can get the odd ones were the vent runs the whole length of the house, So when you get Just the small vents you take care not to direct the Jet directly into the vent and on the long run vents, I try to work under the soffit so any water is directed parallel to the house and not directly into it.

I did tests on my own house and I have the long vent and after I finished the Job I went into the roof space and every where was bone dry so I have no problems. Just be aware of how you operate and everything will be fine, almost 2 years and not one problem yet.

White Guttering is the one you need to pay more attention to for obvious reasons? There was a time when I have had to use the brush but that was on guttering that hadn't been cleaned in 20 years but under normal circumstances the narrow Jet spray will shift the dirt from the real dirty including the real green looking ones quickly and easily.

Ok  I'll  run you through it

Have your tube laid down on the bench (before you flatten it) and around 2,3 or 4" from one end (depending on how big you want your scoop)
Get a hack saw and cut half way through the tube and then you cut up through the center up to the cut you just made so you can pull the two sides apart to begin making the wings, Now you can start to flatten the tube at the end were your scoop is, study the picture of mine to get the idea of what I mean? Once your happy then shape the the end to look like a spoon, once your happy then begin to flatten the whole tube but stop around 6" from the other end so you can fit it to your pole, shape the flattened section to  what I call a shepherds crook shape, get the idea from my pictures and see if you can copy it.

Before you add the strengthening bar do a couple of tests  you can do this on the ground by pushing against the spoon hard to see were the tubes weakest point will be, mark it and then add your strengthening bar.

I use an old universal pole dedicated to the scoop and I bolted the scoop onto it so I don't loose it in the guttering lol

Check my drawing to see if it helps  you?

What worries me Jeff, is that the last place I would want to dispose of all that crud would be down the gutterpipe? Do you not worry about this?
I have the lance and a vac but have never mastered the lance really for insides - I tend to splatter it everywhere.  ;D

So you don't like my guitar music then  :o :'( :'( simply turn off your speakers and problem solved  ;D ;D  ;)

I lost my direct link to northerntool when I had to reformat my hard drive but Northerntool is the place to buy them (Just google then) along with all the bits you need for it.

My advice on pressure washers is always go for the best one you can afford and try to get one with a syphon facility with it so if no.

When you have bought all your gear Just leaflet all your customers and tell everyone that you now clean guttering.

I scoop the worst of it out ftp  ;) as you see by the video but if it turns out to be really bad one then I simply tie a pair of old tights to the outlet or an old net bag for vegetables given away by any supermarket  just to be on the safe side ;)

Practice with the lance and it can soon be mastered I even do guttering over conservatories and this does please custy's  ;)
