« on: October 14, 2009, 04:30:48 pm »
Hi there, just want a bit of advice really, where is the best place to advertise for staff? Just recently decided to take that next step of employing someone so i have advertised in local post offices, but apart from a few time wasters ,nothing..Just wondered whether the job centres were ok as it's only a few hours a week to start with...Any advice appreciated thanks..Pauline

you need to give 16 hours (to 24 hrs) to begin.

If you dont they lose their benefits. They know this and wont apply.
You might get lucky, but dont hold your breath.

That said jobcentre is free, register with them and get approved and you can post online.
I use it all the time and it works as well as anything (its now the ONLY place I advertise)

Ah, Pauline, i see what you mean.

Homemaid, can you please explain the 16 to 24 hr thing? My owm understanding in my area is that people can work up to 16 hours. I have a family memeber who is careful to do less as she will lose her benefit. She does 14.5. per week. But she isnt penalised for doing less than 16.

Vacman..that was my understanding too, they could work up to 16hrs a wk and claim benefits or at least some....i'm really going to look into this, and besides i'm sure some other cleaning companies have staff who maybe only do a few hrs  a wk, not too sure ..thanks for the replies folks..

There are numerous places to advertise for staff, job centres, gumtree, cards in shop windows, word of mouth, recommendations from existing staff,  even a4 laminate in van windows. I have used all all these methods in the past. the employee you get depends on your screenng process rather than where they saw your advert.

Jobcentre is great and free I used to have 1 hour cleans 7 days a
week and never had a problem getting staff even done working interviews
/work trial got them to help me do the clean much better than talking as for
benefits over 16 hours needed for working tax credit most of my staff wanted
to earn under 100 quid so I kept there p46

Hi do you have the work lined up ready for your potential staff or are you getting the staff in place first?.  Only asking as I'm in the position where I now need to expand!! I have 1 member of staff, who is a mum from my childrens school, so there wasn't a need to advertise.  I am going to advertise through the jobcentre and shop windows...

If you work UNDER 16 hours you are entitled to some benefits (couldn't tell you what) however if you work OVER 16 hours you will be entitled to working family credit which is what most people want.

We find that the worst place to advertise is on-line sites as we get a load of people who can't speak english, only give an email address so it takes us days to get all the info we need, or we get spammed.
We find the best place to advertise is local papers, even now with internet being main for clients we get our best results from the press.

I would expect this would vary quite a lot depending on where you live... perhaps try a few things for a month and make sure you get sources of enquiry from every single applicant.

Good luck :)
