Do I send this or not?
« on: October 13, 2009, 09:13:42 pm »
To cut a long story I didn't clean one of three houses today because they owe me from June. I put a note through the door saying the account was on stop. Got this reply -

David

Disappointed with the note you left at the above property, I have txt  and e-mailed you regarding cheques and auto banking, as on my business account it costs me more than is worth for transferring just £8, the same being as the charge for a cheque, so could we build it up to a decent amount or the arrangement   I made with you at the start that you would txt me the night before you were coming and I would leave the money in the cupboard I showed you in the outhouses, I only received a txt on the first visit! ( I did not receive any message last night).  I have now transferrred £24.00 to your account.  I am starting building an extension and replacement windows in the next two weeks so please cancel my windows from your rounds.

Yours

I want to send this back -

Hi

Thank you for finally communicating with me. I would like to address your points one by one.

I have txt  and e-mailed you regarding cheques and auto banking
This I find surprising as I have received neither and all my other customers seem able to get in contact with me. I have just searched a years worth of email and nothing has ever been received from you. If you we not getting answers surely the next logical step would have been to ring me?

on my business account it costs me more than is worth for transferring just £8
While it is obviously a piddling amount to you, it represents 30 minutes of my hard labour, dodging dog crap and trying to deal with your flaking frames. Your oldest debt is from 16/6/09 - 119 days. The second oldest, 16/07/09 - 89 days. Who are you to decide it is ok to leave me waiting 119 days for payment without ever even having the respect to discuss it with me first?

on my business account it costs me more than is worth for transferring just £8
Secondly on this point, I have never heard of a business account that doesn't issue a cheque book. Why did you not simply send a cheque. I even pay the postage and address the free envelope for you.

on my business account it costs me more than is worth for transferring just £8
Thirdly on this point why do you have to use a business account to pay for your domestic window cleaning, why could you not use your personal account to transfer funds to me, it is free?

so could we build it up to a decent amount or the arrangement
I suspect you mean that you wanted to build a large debt and pay it in one go. Firstly it would have been nice to have been asked. Secondly why should I allow this. If you any respect you would have offered to pay 3/4 months in advance rather than leave me waiting 120 days for payment!!!

I made with you at the start that you would txt me the night before you were coming and I would leave the money in the cupboard I showed you in the outhouses, I only received a txt on the first visit!
That is very true and does make it seem like it is my fault this problem has occurred. However, you have very conveniently forgotten the conversation we had 6 months ago. You very clearly stated that if I supplied bank details, you would transfer payment. You neglected to tell me you meant every six months or so. No conversation, text or email ever suggested anything different regardless of what you claim above.

I did not receive any message last night
Strange, I have a report from O2 confirming the text was sent. Missed communications again eh Gail!

I have now transferrred £24.00 to your account
Thank god for that!

so please cancel my windows from your rounds.
Good riddance!

You see, I have spent the best part of 20 minutes typing this and the irony is that if you don't even realise you were out of order leaving me without payment for so long, you will never be able to see my point of view on this so I will have wasted my time.

I know it is unprofessional but right now I don't really care. Going to go have a cuppa and see how I feel then.

Send that and expect to lose numerous others that these people might know or risk a visit from a 14 stone gorilla who will rip your arms off.
Either just forget about it and move on (£8 isn't worse the effort) or at best reply with thank you for your custom over the years, I'm sorry there was a breakdown in our relationship but should you require our services in the future, please contact us and we will endeavour to ensure that we all understand what is needed.

I really wouldn't waste anymore time on it, you might just get yourself in an argument that will get you no where.  If he bad mouths you as well you could loose a lot more customers.  I have customers that don't like issuing cheques because of charges (£4 not £8) incurred so he may have a point there.  I'd say rise above it and move on, you'll feel better for it in the long run.

You are right really but with this particular customer it is an isolated batch of 3 houses literally miles from any other of my customers. I am prepared to loose all 3.

As for 14 stone gorilla, I am 6' 2" and haven't been 14 stone for about 15 years. If I lost about 6 stone then I would be there or there abouts. However, I am a fit big lad who enjoys a little JKD.

Dont bother, ive spent time trying to get one over on people...when in the end it just isnt worth it, the next minute youll have an email back which will fuel you even more and could go on and on. Youve got your money, shes cancelled, dunna worry about it matey, lifes too short.

I had a big house the other day ring me up and cancel and a few years back  wold of asked why and i was just like "ok thanks byeee" and she didnt know what to say, stumbled..."oh oh erm bye"

Show them you dont care.  ;)

Even better, just reply "ok thanks"

Short and sweet.

A happy customer tells 10 others, an unhappy one tells everyone. It takes ages to build something up and as little as a day to destroy it. I speak from experience.
I'd move on and forget about it.

Even better "no worries"

My mom always said to me "kill em with kindness"

You never know, she might ask you back one day and be a really good customer...even better though your rid of her...and you got your money!

On reflection this is wise advice. If you do send then keep it accurate and stiffly polite so lose the "good riddance" and replace with "In the circumstances I am very happy to inform you that I take your cancellation as permanent. Good day."

And replace "thank god for that" with "I was most disappointed to have to wait so long and feel that said inordinate amount of time signifies your lack of respect towards me."
It's a game of three halves!

I agree. I will wait and see how I feel tomorrow. Like I said she is miles from anywhere else I clean so doubt she could have much of an impact on other custies.

Having just typed it up makes me feel better, maybe don't need to send but would still love to.
