Gaining work through recommendation!!
« on: October 13, 2009, 05:42:18 pm »
Here is my story in brief, some may know it, some may not!!

I sold a large residential window cleaning business - 18 months ago now!! - that has flown!!. When Neil came on saying he sold his round that had become a monster I knew exactly what he was talking about. Well done Neil!!

The round managed me and we were obviously filling a gap in the market for good quality window cleaning but there comes a point when the round becomes a living thing and just through quality of work, people seeing you and knowing of you, it starts to generate its own new customers and you don't have to do anything to assist this.

Neil has been there and so have I. You have to look at employment and everything that goes with that. When I sold my round I was glad to be rid of it and like Neil I was grateful for it being worth a lot more than I see them advertised for - I got what I wanted for it.

I spent a lot of the money on the commercial refurb programme works equipment that was required. These works had started the previous year and I needed dedicated equipment and additional pieces to fulfill the dmands of this new level

I had only sold the round and I lost a major contract for 20k per year. That hurt but I always believed that I had done the right thing and I kept on. Then we went into the recession and it went quiet but kept ticking over. I had to lay the last of my lads off in September last year and since then I have cleaned every store on my own. It has been a long period and I am tired. Not a spring chicken anymore - even if I want to be!

I kept on doing the work and giving the people I spoke to business cards.

Well now it seems is payback time for putting the effort in.

Contact I met last year in Essex phones me up for pressure washing work at Heathrow airport - works pending.

Recommendation from security guard I spoke to at a store in Surrey- now on Waitrose refurbishment programme, works done and future works pending.

Contact I met at another store in Surrey, phone call this morning - do you want to do the external cleaning on the Asda refurbishment programme.

I can say and I am a living testament - I started with exactly what you guys started with - NOTHING!, that if you want a better life, more money and immense self satisfaction all you have to do is be the very best you can, offer a better quality service, work as hard as you can and keep letting people know you are out there the law of averages is that you will get to where you want to be.

Good luck to you all

Rob ;D

Because I have no staff structure in place, you I am hoping will be one of the select few I am looking for - to help in that department.

I absolutely love doing what I do. There are two things in my life that I love more than myself, my wife and my work and I have told my wife never to put me in a position where I have to make a choice!!

i totally agree.

my round is 5 years old and its now become a monster!

only 28yrs old so can handle the work load. run it all by myself on the window cleaning side of the business - with over 300 houses a month and over 20 commercial jobs to do a month. it takes away the beer time but it as made my life alot different in money terms.

always best to do your best with pride and the work will come rolling in.

Dean- I know I keep saying I will call but dont. Dont worry I will be in touch very soon!!

Martin - Well done - isn't it a good feeling when you have got something from nothing.

I would like to add that this is not a post to say look at me - I'm the greatest, it is to say if I can do it (I am no one special) then anyone can do it!!! and I think we don't have enough positive on the forums. I think it is good that people see that people are moving forward and developing. Bring on the positive stories!!

You always put up good posts rob (Mclean) and have a fresh approach.

I would be too much of a coward to ditch the monster as you have done.At least you got to live local and had a mad money machine.

My monster can be a bit stressfull.I get angry phone calls and customers who follow me around and moan.Sometimes it makes me depressed, and i mull over annoying things the customers have done or said when i should be asleep. My pet annoyance is when i have brought life changing window cleaning into their lives, transforming a not cleaned in years minging hovel into a virtual show home, only to find that by clean three they are finding fault and picking me up on the smallest details (small pre existing varnish stains is one example)You are of course correct about recomendation.

How does your being away from home work? what would a typical week or month be like? I know that you have mentioned towing a caravan before.Do you watch telly? go to the pub?Work/sleep go back?

Slump

A typical week would be Sunday drive to the store, having hitched up the pressure washing trailer. Saturday is a prep day for getting red diesel, food for the week, washing & doing ironing and washing the van.

Get to the store for 4pm and set up and start cleaning, pressure washing, graffiti removal, cladding cleaning, roof cleaning etc etc. Finish about ten.

Find a quiet space on the car park and get in the van (accomodation - see wages post). Pour a big drink & add coke!!

Maybe have a snack and tune the telly in. Watch telly for a bit and then get a wash, get head down and get up for about 6.30. Work all day and then wash up, cook tea, possibly go out and have a look round the local area, go for a walk - I like walking plus it gets me out of the van. I work till Friday then drive back up the M1. Repeat. This can go on for weeks at a time. I am going to Kent on Sunday and expect to be finished about mid November

whats the work rob? are you cleaning everything on every store in the world?? lol

if its not too cheeky, dont wanna know how much but are you charging per job or on a fixed rate for each one etc?

dont mind if you dont wanna go into detail though :)

And is it one big contract? or you got loads? if it was one surely you would worry about it being dropped! :o

ROB,

I am so glad you are reaping the rewards, slowly but surely  :)

I myself am focused & extremely dedicated at what i do, and have started seeing benefits after sticking to my goals and not being sidetracked.

19 years running my own business & have now set myself a nice target regarding my work within 18 months, so i will keep at it.

You are also, a very good hearted person, full of advice when required....

I will make time in the next month & contact you, to come and meet you for a chat and coffee,

Chris

Sean - it is cleaning everything on the stores. Not going to go into the way or how much I am paid. I get lots to clean!

Archer - Thanks for that - coffee would be good!

Matt - It is a temporary situation (from my perspective) and is something that has been necessary to get to where I am at. I have children - not youngsters though and an excellent relationship with my wife. My circumstances would not suit everyone but then everyone does not have my aspirations.

If you want to achieve big things then you need to sacrifice. As long as there is an exit strategy then it didn't ought to be anything more than a temporary problem.
