communal area clean, blood + glass
« on: October 08, 2009, 09:31:50 pm »
Got a call to communal area flats that I clean. Nutter had locked himself out of first stairwell, so smashed window, then cut himself, and moved along to the next block. x5 pressing buttons, and depositing blood on the door frames etc.  though not a lot,  to be fair. Then smashed another 2 door windows. What do I charge for this? Is 1 stairwell clean payment charge ok, or should it be more for blood, glass disposal. I will get more work hopefully from this factor so don`t want to rip them off, but on the other hand I don`t want to do it for next to nothing. It took me 1/2 the normal cleaning time to do the job.

As it was a specialist clean and a quick call out but bearing in mind the half the time senario i would charge a full rate. If you charge half the rate your setting a precident for future issues but if you over charge you might lose future work..derek
this is another fine mess ive got myself into

Then there is the training, insurances etc etc etc, it'll all add up. Of course there is no doubt in my mind that there are folk stupid enough to do this sort of cleaning for less than the minimum wage, cash, but to do it as a 'business' won't be cheap.

Did you do a risk assessment and a method statement ? Are you trained ? Have a waste carriers licence ? Had hep jabs, used the correct fluid to deal with the bio waste and disposed with everything in the correct manor ? Are you insured to do trauma remediation ?  Do you think you should be doing this work for nothing when it could potentially kill you or another resident ? Lots of questions that all cost to answer properly ?

I have a feeling they haven't though of most of that.. if they did they wouldn't need to ask how much to price it.

I guess everyone need to learn their trade somehow..

There will always be some cheap guy that has no idea what they are doing, doing it for pennies.

If you are not trained or don't have waste carry licence then do not do it.

You will require products to do it right, things like soak up granules, the right disinfectants or sodium hypochlorite 10,00 ppm 1% solution, bio bags, then you will need to have destroyed!

Glass will have blood on it so will require sharp boxes.

It don't matter if it is a lot! it what it can do to others is important!

You would require PPE like goggles, gloves, disposable apron, disposable towels, hand sanitizer, yellow dust pan and brush.

If you have no clue to price it don't do it, you would be at risk if not done rigjt then so are others.

Hi Gary

Looks like you have done the job already, can you tell us how you undertook the job and what you used?

This is not to have a go but to help you in future with the proper cleaning techniques and solutions to use.

Although as stated you should have the proper training, insurances etc the fact remains that undertaking this kind of cleaning is not regulated in the UK, sadly this does mean that anyone can undertake the work (this doesn't mean they should)

With blood and contaminated sharps if the blood is not neutralised it poses a danger to yourself and other people because of the diseases that reside within the blood, it is also unknown if the person who caused the damage is a cancer patient or a heamophiliac (spelling) or has HIV etc.

Although it took you half the time you need to charge accordingly so I would say £175 is a fair amount because of the danger you and others are exposed to.

Where did you end up putting the glass?  If you still have it then take it down to your local hospital, they should dispose of it for you.

Regards
