Best way to get new Residential and Commercial customers
« on: October 06, 2009, 06:18:24 pm »
I'm New to the site so hello all! I'm from the states and I've been pretty confused on the best route to take as far as getting new customers.. I know this has probably been posted a hundred times but I haven't been able to find a post that relates directly to mine and stays on topic through the 750 something pages on this forum... ANyways, ive had pro uniform made with my logo and really nice fliers made and business cards also.. Approx. 2500 fliers.. Now.. For you guys who know what works and what has worked for you.. do you just flier all over the place or in a the same area over and over? Or do you do knocking doors which takes more time than just drop and go? also, does this work the same for commercial accounts? Its about to be winter soon so i wanted to try to get something started for the next few months leading into next year... And I'm just confused on what to do and what approach to take!

Ps... This is for normal window cleaning with squeege and scrubber not WFP system..
And what did or do you say to people if you knock doors instead of fliering?

Thanks everyone!

I can help people in the states no problem. I did not get confused but UK market is a little diffrent from the states....... If the guy is in the wrong county give him a break and give him a thumbs up in the right direction...

The main difference we have noticed with our American brothers is the time between cleans. I seem to remember that 6 - 12 months between cleans was normal.
Therefore the cleans tended to be restoration cleans as well as internal and external, the price was therefore in the hundreds of dollars for a job, whereas we would be charging £10 - £20 a clean.
In this case it would appear you would need to run the business more like a carpet cleaning business than our window cleaning businesses.

well some of the guys on here have spoken to numerous guys from the US about window cleaning, and theres quite a few on another forum but not allowed to put a link up, things are done differently here we clean 2,4 and 8 weekly where as you guys clean say 6 to 12 monthly, your prices are a lot more then us here due to the fact your at a property longer, and we dont have sceens etc infront of our glass, but canvassing is the best method as custy sees you face to face, so some forum searching and youll find a site full of Americans.  ;D

no disrespect to the thread poster but i think window cleaning resources.com would be a far better forum for an american window cleaning.

I would go something along the lines of " Hi my name is Brandon, i own and run XYZ window cleaning. I am expanding my business into this area, would you be interested in a free quotation on your property "
If yes then go price it there and then, if no.... smile politely, give them a card for future reference and thank them for their time.

Hope this is of some help

the difference is that in the UK the customers have windows cleaned every 4 - 6 or 8 weeks and in the USA its normally every 6 - 12 months

Brandon, you are very much on the right track. This is what I do.

I knock on peoples doors, which is the best way, and most reliable way of getting new customers. If they are not in, I leave them a flier. If you really want to intensify your search in one particular area, go back a couple of days later, and knock on the doors that weren't in, if they are in now, ask if they saw your flier.

This is usually what I say : Hi, my name is so and so, and I run my own local window cleaning/washing business here in the area. I'm just wondering if you would like to have your windows cleaned on a regular basis. If that sounds a bit long, you can shorten it to something that suits you more.

If they say yes, ask them if they would mind if you have a quick look around the property to give them an accurate price (make sure you do so, because each house is different! Even if it's just the access to the windows.) Then tell them the price, be confident about it, even if it's a high price, look them in the eye, smile and say your price. If you think that's an acceptable price, go for it, don't let them mess you about. If they complain, say that that is a common price, and helps you to give a reliable professional service, all year around. After that you can discuss particulars about the job, like frequency, interior window cleaning etc.

Always looks professional (no chewing gum, hair neat, shaved), always smile. And most of all, just relax, be confident in yourself. The worst thing that can happen is a 'no thank you' ey?
