Microsoft Word Software
« on: October 02, 2009, 09:10:45 am »
I am currently using Microsoft Works Word Processor which was free with my laptop. But when I attach a file created in this no-one can open it up. Can anyone give me some advice on if its possible to get Microsoft Word as a free download?? Any advice would be appreciated

Barbara - you cannot get MS Word free unless its an illegal copy - thats how Bill Gates has become a multi millionaire, he doesnt give away his top products free.

How old is the laptop?
More to the point - how old is MS Word on the machine?
If you open your Word program and go to "Help" then to "About Microsoft Word" you should see which version it is.
Mine is 2002.
If yours is the very latest then their may be compatability problems if you send an attachement to someone with an older version.
My son has the latest version and I cannot open his attachements so he saves the attachement in word as an earlier version - done thro the "save as" button from the "File" menu.

Thats as I see it - somone else may have a different idea.

No you cant, however you save the file as a .rtf instead of a .wps which is the works standard format, when you save the file change the extension from the drop down list near the bottom

.rtf will enable most programs to open it, strange that microsofts own products are so incimpatible but they do it so you will go out and buy word/office

I use a free suite called open office (www.openoffice.org/)which is fantastic and completly free, comes with spreadsheets database word processor etc, google it... and its compatible with office again just save everything as .rtf (rich text format)

I also have downloaded a free word viewer from microsofts site so i can open word files without the need for the programme ,i then copy and paste them to where i want them

I,m pleased this post has arisen,

I have recently sent an invoice by e mail with m/s word as the attachment  the response from the recipient was " cant open "  yet they have had before in the same format, and as they prefer their invoices by e mail as opposed to post mail I was a little pi**ed off.

I've been using Open office for over a year now and dont have any problems with it and it's handy for sending invoices with its automatic .pdf converter.
