« on: September 25, 2009, 04:00:15 pm »
Hi, after taking the plunge and buying a gutter vac, which as yet we havnt even used in anger,  we have been asked to quote on a job for an old peoples home thats 3 storeys high, we have gone around the building and reckon theres 200m approx of gutters to clean and to be honest we havnt got a clue how much to charge, if theres anyone doing this sort of thing out there any advice would be really appriciated, many thanks John

Thanks for the info, I like cleanglassuk price best  ;D but need to get me head round how long and how hard the job will be, only used it on the back of me house so far and had to have therapy on me shoulders after, its a lot harder than vaccing the floor, think I need to go body building :-[

Id say that as its 3 storeys high the job will be secured by someone with a gutter vac. You should be able to charge a premium therefore. However, because its a sizeable job perhaps the rate per metre ought to be slightly discounted.

£2.50 a metre is my guess for just vacuuming out.

If it's the genuine version why not give Omnipole a ring and get their advice?

i have cleaned them 3 storey high with a power washer

a cheapo power washer, a power washer 30 M extension hose bolted on the end of a bracket bolted on the end of my 9 M ali unger pole

it worked well and they have never been so clean

you will be possibly competing with a guy on a ladder and a pole ( yes they do go that high ) yes he might have to do 3 climbs per side, but its do-able, climb either end and push all the stuff into the middle with a pole and gutter attachment then a climb in the middle to gather the material

OR

gutter attachment on end of pole, drag it all along to 1 side then climb ladder with trowel and bucket

OR

power washer to blast it all out

just pointing out that just becasue you have the gutter vac it doesnt mean you can charge the earth because you have spent the money out on the vac
if you need to the work, go in with a sensible price

Matt this would be a commercial job, would the home be happy with some guy 30' up a ladder when safer alternatives are available?

they might , the 3 storey job i used to do is now done off ladders with a bucket and trowel

BUT

the power washer will be quick aswell

i was just pointing out that just because you have the gutter vac it doesnt mean you can charge the earth because some havent and will do it for less, johnmaggy might need the work

usually the care taker shows yuo around on that sort of  job
offer him a good drink  if you get the job works wonders some times

id say £300 is a good price as well

gutter vac or ladder i dont think the care homes care all they want is a cheep price

Its a genuine gutter vac just not omnipoles and should be released in about 6/7 weeks by the manufacturer, doing some digging i got one of there test ones for next to nothing as long as i give them feed back on usage, and a cam to go with it for £100, they have avised me on what they think charges should be but was wondering what people out there are already getting.

Thanks for the advice guys, I agree just cuz u got a vac dosnt mean you can charge the earth, same as the drive cleaning just cuz you spent £2000 on a pressure washer dosnt mean you can charge more than someone who does it with a cheaper one. Go in with a sensible price seems to be the right thing and dont be gready, thanks again for the advice.

However, if the only other way to clean them is using a cherry picker then you could go in high.
I think the days of charging a premium will come to an end as more and more people buy vacs and start charging day rates that they are happy with. £200 for less than a days work sounds very reasonabe for some. Whereas others may charge three times that amount and get away with it.
