Wheelie Bin Start-up
« on: May 22, 2005, 12:00:22 pm »
Hi,

Wheelie bins will be introduced in my area at the end of the month.
They will be emptied every other week.We will also have tiny brown bins to put your food in that will be emptied every week.
Will people still need their main big bin cleaned if it contains no smelly rotting food?
I currently run a small window cleaning business & can see the potential in this as they are going to slowly be fazed in over the surrounding areas.
I have had some start -up advice but would appreciate some more input, such as what set-ups do some people have?
I have been offered a fairly new hydraulic system for lots of dosh but don't know if it would be worth it.
Cheers,

Justin

Hi Justin,

As you may have guessed i'm new on the forum, and may i say what a brilliant way to get advice and give advice on all those business matters, i'm impressed!!

Anyway as to your equipment set up that would depend on how far you want to go and how much you are willing to shell out, there are franchises you can take up with various companies which are very expensive but they take care of supplying you with the van and equipment, but you are leasing the van, you will have to read the small print on those, as there may be a few catches!! It's an option if you don't want the hassle of doing all the red tape yourself.
You will also have to find out where your nearest trade waste sewer is and contact them to make arrangements to dump your dirty water containers you will have to pay for this too, You will need to contact the enironment agency to let them know what you are doing.  Don't make the mistake other wheelie bin cleaners have made by dumping your waste water in the street drains as the water companies are becoming wise to this and will sue you if you are caught, contact you area water company and the environment agency, they will tell you the same thing, they are on the look out for this as it is contamination!  Then this way when you have made all the neccessary above at least you are covered by the red tape of environment issues.
I live in south west Devon, and have a few small  villages in the south hams, i charge around £1.50 and i am the cheapest around, i have the full kit, my van does it all for me i dont have to even lift up the bins, but my set up cost me the earth, don't know when i will brake even yet, it will be some time yet!
Happy Hunting, Good Luck.

Hi Wheeliegleeming
You said

Time for a rethink I would say.
Who wants to be the cheapest around get those prices up.

£1.50 a bin is crazy espically if you have the best equipment around also.

I would double your prices so ok loose half your customer base who cares you are no worse off but have more time for canvassing for work at a decent price.

You say your van does it all for you. After the bin is lifted up can you tell us how the van cleans the inside of the bin lid the outside of the bin lid and the outside of the bin I would be very intrested to know as I did not know such a system existed.

I have a spread sheetprofit calculator if you have some figures I could help you calculate your breakeven. Although I suspect at £1.50 per clean it may never happen.

Good luck if I can be of any help give me a call the number is on the site

Justin
