Attitude off people when leafleting
« on: September 18, 2009, 10:34:50 pm »
Some people really P me off sometimes with there attitudes. When leafleting i,ve had comments like 'We dont want YOUR leaflet'-said in a right bad attitude while looking at me as if im dirt, and also when walking up a drive there was someone gardening and said 'What you want and why are you in my garden'-again in a right bad attitude. Showed them he leaflet and went to explaine but they didnt want to know and told me to go away ???-a simple no thank you would do.

At least im getting off my backside to work and (attempt) to run my own bussiness, id never have an attitude to someone leafleting to my house. Puts me right on one sometimes but i just bite my lip, smile, appologise and carry on to the next house. All these responses have been from people in 'well to do areas'.

Anyone else have simular experiances.

There's always a few snotty bstards around.  But it's just a numbers game, that's two out of how many leaflets you've delivered to date??

Make yourself feel better by thinking that for every one householder who's off with you, there's probably another 10 who pick up the leaflet and think "Oh that's interesting, I was just thinking these carpets look a bit dirty....."

Don't get wrapped up in other peoples' negativity, it'll bring you down if you let it :)

I have always found the so called well brought up, pretentious posh people, to be the rudest! I would never dream of being like that with anyone. But I was brought up on a Council estate where if you were disrespectful, your dad would get his head kicked in!

I actually do comment when I get this sort of attitude by asking them why they are being so rude... It stumps them! I will not take crap off anyone, I had 13+ years of it in the Navy!!!!

True what you say in that they done me a favour-no way would i work for them with an attitude like that over a leaflet.

It makes me appreciate the tidy clients more, true what you say colin about the 'upper class' types. Always found your more likely to get a tip or be offerd a cuppa from non 'up there ass' types.

End of day you take rough with the smooth i suppose.

first of all i'm with you on this guys, but let me be devils advocate, (i think thats right?)

how many of you guys have had 6 or 7 calls in a day from companies saying they can get you to the top of google, lower your mobile phone bill or sign you up for a "save the fire brigade booklet thats only 120 quid for the year, by the time we get to the 7th call of the day we tend to be a bit rude,
maybe some people just get pee'd off with junk mail and have decided to dismiss the lot.

just looking at it from another angle.

like i said i'm with you on this but i wonder how many telesales forums have a thread that say "attitudes of people recieving our calls"
after all, there only trying to make a living, its there job. ;)

Take your point Derek and agree about the countless calls from Google,YP etc, but with a leaflet they aint getting interupted like they are with a call. OK you can get a load of advertising mail (i wont call it 'junk' mail) but that can be read when your ready. Not as if we walk in on some big meeting or them having lunch and say-Hi heres my leaflet, its just pop it through the letter box.

yeah i completelly agree with you, we did some leafleting other day, and whilst we was there some people was very rude. there was two guys outside so my husband nicely asked if they would like our leaflet(as they was in their gardens, and one of them asked what our services was so he told him, and his reply was no you alrite in a reaaly rude stuck up voice. i felt like swinging for him, but we just thanked him and went. and i noticed its always tend to be towards men this attitude as when i go over to people, yeah they look down on me once read my leaflet but dont tend to be rude at first.

If you go on to other people's property wanting to shove scraps of paper through their letter boxes, stands to reason you are going to get the odd negative comment. :D

If you are overly sensitive to this it might be worth paying someone else to do it or find another marketing method perhaps.

I think trying to approach the householder is the mistake, they instantly feel threatened and go on the defensive, hence the hostile negative reaction.  Smile nicely and say "good morning" but keep making a beeline to the letterbox.  Only stop and hand it to them if they ask you to.

If they then go and pick the leaflet out of the letterbox, you've gone and are no longer in their face and posing a threat.  Telling you to bugger off is just an instinctive reaction, they might even need their carpets cleaning but that doesn't enter their head!

Dogs will bark at you when you walk into their territory, doesn't mean that deep down they don't want you to tickle their bellies, it's just instinct ;)

Although I've had the odd funny look off people from inside when delivering leaflets "oh no not another one!" I guess if I see someone outside I tend to approach them with something like "good evening sir can do you mind if  leave you one of these".

It gives them the option of saying no and lets them see that who you are.

There is no excuse for rudeness as far as I am concerned, a polite yes or no is all that is needed.

the easy answer is if they are in the garden or outside bypass thier house,  don't give them a leaflet.

that's what I do

An Englishman's home, etc...............

It's not YOU they're being rude to, it's " another bleeding leaflet " which might be the 6th on the day! Use your existing client list to expand your business by asking for referrals. Almost everyone you clean for will ask for a card ( assuming you do excellent work )
Give them three cards and an interesting leaflet which would NOT be a photo of a van or a carpet cleaning machine, but photos of the best before and after carpet and upholstery jobs you've done.

Sell the sizzle.

A very good idea  the complaining sort would then perversely actually want a leaflet , I had people chase me down the street to ask for a leaflet after doing this , fear of loss and all that.

As Mike says if there is anyone out in the garden I just walk by now. For everyone you see outside their house there is 50 houses without. I don't need the grief just walk by guys!

Ive had all the abuse over the years but my fave was when I put a leaflet through a woman's door she came belting out and put it straight in to her wheelie bin. I said 'that was subtle' and she gave me the dirtiest look ever!

Just ignore them and carry on, they are absolute idiots. Some of them have signs on their doors saying they don't want junk mail or free newspapers. Remember when they use to have signs saying no Jehovah Witnesses? Well that was discriminant and now I don't see those signs anymore. Well there is no law as far as I am aware to stop you from dropping leaflets in their letter boxes, if they don't want it, bin it, that's what they get recycle bins for.

I have had people chase after me down the street to give me back my leaflet and to ask me if I can't read, to which I just answer no, that's why I am doing this, no need for reading! You want to see the look on their faces when I reply.  PRICELESS!

The government and local councils distribute information this way, so why can't we? The Royal Mail does it without any interference so why can't we? These people are thick, the royal mail does it with there post and they don't complain or chase after the post man do they? If you pay the Royal Mail to do your leaflets its the same leaflet these people are getting, all you are doing is cutting cost.

Oh, don't use the Royal Mail for leaflets, do it yourself!

There are some homes that you have to look out for, the ones with dogs, if they have signs saying no leaflets or newspaper  it's because the dogs find the things amusing so they shred the paper.

I should get a truck and my Uncle's staffs. and start a shredding business. Hmm!
