Repetitive strain injuries
« on: September 14, 2009, 12:19:45 am »
I've been happily wanding for near 20 years but I have noticed a numbness in my hand over the past few weeks, this is my 'trigger hand'. It passes if I hang my arm down and flex/shake my fingers but after prolonged use it does become uncomfortable. I've tried strapping but that has not helped, anyone else suffer from this, and if so have you been able to overcome it. Not sure if this is RSI or something else, obviously i'm a fella so a doctor will be no use ;D

Simon,

I have the same thing but in my lower right arm. It's a real sod to get rid of because you keep using it day after day. Ibuprofen tablets help with the inflammation but resting it is about the only thing that clears it up and that's not easy when you're a carpet cleaner.

I was suffering from a real severe pain in the ball of my left foot for about 12 months before I changed to using a wand ??? Has anyone else ever suffered from it? It's completely gone now I'm happy to say.... I never went to the Doctors either, although I should, their carpets are minging, I could offer them a free sample clean and quote ;D ;D ;D

Colin - exactly same here!!! had it bout 5 months now .  Thought it was down to cfr forward wanding technique. Have since bought a prowler with regular pull wanding but still no improvement....  doing my head in!!! Been told its down to poor footwear ie flat soled trainers etc..

Stu

think this could be a busy thread

Stu, I stopped wearing flat soled trainers but that wasn't the problem. I used the pull technique with a heavy bit of kit (Won't say the name or make on here, in case of upsetting certain people ::))

As soon as I started using the wand, the pain started to diminish and now it's completely "Heeled".... Sorry!!!!

I guess in our line of work it's easy to step on something accidentally and it hurts at the time but forgotton about. Because the feet don't get a good blood supply and you are walking on them a lot it can take months to get better.

I used to love the Bruffies when I had no choice but to 'push through the pain' LOL but now I'm soft I used RICE and my new favourite drug Diclofenac.

Re numbness could be a trapped nerve or even a knotted muscle in the forearm, even back or shoulder.

Get down the Docs you're mad if you don't get it diagnosed.

And, do people swap right left handed wanding now and then?

Maybe carpet tunnel syndrome in the hands or similar neural impingement/neural tension elsewhere in the body.

Active Release Therapy and/or Neural ''flossing'' (google) helps  but best to seek out a top physio (chiro etc. before hand.

I have these soughts of problems at the moment.

Hi it is carpel tunnel problem
mine has come back after 4 yrs when i had it rinsed out, there is a more intensive operation where they have to open up your wrist and get all the build up of crap in the tunnel out. Only problem with this is that you are out of action for a month or so, you cant move your hand at all.

Regards

Daryl

How do you get it 'rinsed out' Trying to find someone in norfolk/suffolk who can do the active release technique but having no luck. Is this the same thing?

Of course numbness in the hands could be the symptom of many things, some a lot more serious than carpal tunnel or a trapped nerve.

But don't worry us carpet cleaners are well qualified to give you a definitive diagnosis from your couple of posts. What do these doctors know anyway. :D

Surely you can just go to the same people who do colonics?  Maybe they're doing a 2 for 1 offer ;D

Carpal tunnel syndrome is ...........pressure on a nerve due to inflamed ligaments. It can't be rinsed out

If you suffer from this condition or similar a Bowen Therapist can resolve the problem or at least alleviate the pain.

I had a injection in mine to "rinse it" out, thats what i was told it does,
only telling you what i was told.

But as someone has already said it was only a consultant at the hospital so what do they know??

To say we are carpet cleaners, there seems to be a few medical experts on here ;D ;D
