Scary scary noise !
« on: September 07, 2009, 04:12:57 pm »
Did a small retirement flat today,Axminster carpet throughout, heavily soiled from rubber soled slippers.Pointed out the gripper near the kitchen door had come away, and said it will need re stretching back on.Thought nothing else of it,cleaning away ,start hearing little popping noises  >:( Flipping grip bar had started to come off the floor, and was popping off !
Help, more dry passes later, stopped using as much soloution, got it cleaner but not 100%
So knocked £30 off, custy wanted protector, but it was synthetic,so said not to bother.
Explained to her she needed to get it re stretched, seemed happy enough.Very scary !

Had also joked with her that i always managed to pull the emergency cord for help,so went round hooking them all out the way, apart from the one in the hall, which i caught my wand in while packing away  >:( .
You can tell Mercury is in retrograde now

LoL

I had a Belgian Wilton the other week. A year or two ago I was totally paraoniod about getting on wet. Anyway this one with the TM 200psi and two dry passes plus airmover - didn't budge an inch.
I think they are different ones you know, and some shrink more than others. And if they are mingers you've got to go to town on them.

Did a small retirement flat today

The clue's in your first sentence.  The builder wouldn't have installed Axminster at £60/m² or more.  Nor would a housing association if it's that sort of place.  Nor would your average retired couple.

You got yourself a belgian wilton there mate, i'm 90% sure of it, the pattern is a pretty common one on a BW and it doesn't look fluffy enough, nor do the tufts look randomly crunched up enough where the edges are now exposed.  It's reflecting light like polyprop and unlike wool does.

An Axminster wouldn't pop off the grippers that dramatically if it was half-decently affixed.  You'd have to horrendously overwet an Axminster to cause any shocking shrinkage all over.

There's quite a high likelihood that a carpet fitter isn't going to be able to fix this.  The customer is probably stuck with the problem.  A power-stretcher might be the only saving grace, but it isn't a magic wand, who knows ???

The photos don't show but I bet it hasn't been fitted correctly, i.e. double grippers glued down etc.  This might be your only get-out clause, providing you have terms & conditions that you supply to customers with your quote and they state something about "inherent defects....not obvious before commencement".  Saying that though, you can feel if it's double-grippered before you start so no excuse really.... I've only ever come across one BW that had double grippers.

Those door bars are no good for holding on to BW either, the only real way around it is to have hardwood strips across the door thresholds so you can double gripper right the way across.

If this custy is switched on they could probably take you for this unless you've  got the relevant legal stuff in good order.

Hello Jim,It`s been down around 6 years,no double grippers, my contact was with the daughter of the woman who lived there.I think in all probability she may have been miss sold it as axminster, she thought it was wool but i pointed out as soon as i saw it that it was not wool, and def not axminster, her mother had them fitted before moving in there.
Did point out the grip bar before i started it,and said it would need re stretching.
Where the gripper was missing was where the carpet was it`s dirtiest,3 wet passes on that area, then it started popping ! the other rooms were all fine,so think the fact the door bar was missing must have put extra strain on the already poor fixings.

Hi Guys

It's Belgian Wilton on a concrete floor.

The force of the shrinkage has ripped the gripper from the floor, I believe they are meant to be fixed with different nails on concrete but often normal nails are used.

Cheers

after the last episode of a shrinking wilton, i now thoroughly check how its been fitted. and especially around the doors, if it aint done right and its a minger, then out comes the waiver. and if they won't sign it, its a different type of waver, a waver bye bye ;D
