asbestos guttering (help) ?
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:17:59 pm »
i had to price up a job today, to clean guttering, but when i got there they were
asbestos guttering, absolutly ful of crap and in desperate need of painting.
he has asked me to do the painting aswel, which i have accepted to do, for which ive painted guttering plenty of times (the cast iron ones ).
i know i need to be careful to not sand it, but is there anything else to worry about . and anything i need to tell the custy safety wise.
and do you reakon i should charge more because im working with asbestos ?
or give some sort of disclaimer or something ? you see i dont know about this situation at all, because ive never come across it before, any help i will be grateful.
kind regards
paul ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

soffits & guttering will almost certainly be "White Asbestos" which shouldnt be covered by the dangerous material acts

But I would advise you to check with the council first incase it has moved to the Dangerous Materials Act.

(Blue & Brown Asbestos are bad news and should be removed only by a specialist contractor at vast cost).

Now as for painting it I cant advise on that as I have never painted asbestos.

But is asbestos a nit crumbly.. will the paint flake off after a while. If it does I would get the custy to sign a waver on that as thats the type of material and not the quality of the painting itself.

Hope this helps

Paul, stay away from it,though white asbestos is not listed as a higher risk theres still things you need to know and do before you do any work to it,heres a little bit of info

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/a10.pdf

Theres loads more covered on the subject just do a google search.

I had a similer proplem once with asbestos slate roof to clean,it wasn't done in the correct way,i nearly ended up with a £15,000 bill to replace the whole roof, thanks to my lawyer i wasn't fully liable for the damage.

Never will i go near any asbestos again

BTW black bituminous paint will cover it
Been there,seen it,done it,just cant remember when

A long story that took over 8 months to solve >:(.
Basically down to the main contractor cutting corners and not passing on my risk assessment on to the owner then giving me the go ahead without me knowing,2 weeks later the poo hits the fan.
Main contractor who nows in some sunny location had no PLI the owner trying to pin it all on me,again this is just a brief story.

£15,000 wasn't just for the new roof,£9,000 was for the strip and clearup of the old asbestos one once you touch it,it becomes hazard waste :o

Advice to all those who gets asked to clean asbestos slate roofs or anything else for that matter

DONT TOUCH IT
