Looking to expand...
« on: August 14, 2009, 12:07:12 am »
Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask for any experience or advice from anyone who's looked to expand there business beyound just offering basic services, like a simple external residential round to venturing into the professional commercial sector, with risk assessments etc.

Basical, I run a moderate sized round here in the Midlands quite comfortabley.  I'm just in the process of handing back about a weeks worth of work to my father who also window cleans.  I've been managing the work for a percentage to bump up my earnings, but he's expanding and wants to take on further staff, and I want to expand my own business.

Now i'm canvassing around my work here, but i've got the opportunity to take on a weeks work down in London that could prove to be quite luctrative.  I'd earn around 50% more in the week down there than i would working my residential work up here.  But there are further costs obviously, travel, purchase or water down there, place to lay me head (mates house but still need to pay my way).

Has anyone else on here done a similar thing?  Taken on large portions of commercial work further afield and operated it themselves.  Has it proved to be worth while, or too much?  I could just look to expand further in my area of course, although, my immediate area is fairly saturated and competition is high.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Jamie
