Rug Carpet Advice please
« on: August 10, 2009, 08:45:55 pm »
Hi Lads,

I have picked up a rug from a client. I am ok as I have advised I am not 100% if I can cleann it. If I cant no charge. They are ok as well as regular like clock work.

Anyways I have attached a couple of pics. Its long think h strands on this. On the burn test it curls up. After checking I think it is wool. Aso checked Crossley and they make wool carpets.

It does say on the back hand made in china. Not to be dry cleaned!

The main reason for the clean is Dog urine. Whats best for this? Will the smell get removed or is it a waste of time.

How best to clean it please. - Is it a soak in a bath or can I use the portable CC.

As much advice on this as possible please as this will be my first like this.

if it helps it also says its stain resistant. But there are a few stains, what there are is anybodies guess.

Cheers

Dave

Can't read the label but looks like Acrylic. A few cleaners in the past have had odour problems with this type of rug. Think its down to the latex glue degrading.

I'd be tempted to throw this into a bath and hand wash it.
Looks like wool, but do not dry clean says there must be some form of latex bonding there somewhere.

It's viscose piled, why ??? because it says it on it.

I would vac like no tomorrow and then I would get a bucket full of dry foam shampoo and a sponge, do it with foam not wet foam so scrunch the sponge and when dry vac like there's no tomorrow again.

Hi Lads,

Thanks for your help.

I think I need those glasses Shaun more than anyone.

Its not the best pic I know. After looking and looking again. Its 100% Acylic.

Stupid me, it says that on it although in my defense it faded, I used a magnifying glass.

Shaun it does not say Viscose. That bit reads Vision. But if it was not for you guys being so helpful I would have missed that bit. So thanks.

Now I am not so nervous as it acylic. I hate wool rugs.

Dave

I have to say JK you were spot on it 100% Acrylic. I have to ask how could you tell from the picture. What were you looking at to distinguish the difference

If a dog's definitely peed on it, the rug needs immersing in a sanitising/deodorising kind of product.

Give it a good couple of hours' soak, then hose it off.

What's the rug worth?  You could be doing £100 worth of work on a £50 rug.

The issue with latex smelling that JK mentions above (think it's called off-gassing??) is very distinguishable from urine, it just smells rubbery, so you shouldn't get the two mixed up.  One tell-tale sign of that is sometimes if the rug's been on a light coloured carpet, the carpet under it might have gone a yellowy colour.   People sometimes mistake this for UV fading on the rest of the carpet.

P.S. "Hand Made"? doubt it very much, looks tufted, maybe the machine that made it was operated by hand ::)

OK if I soak it in a deoderising product thats fne but I was going to use a Urine Neutrilser.

Would that not be any good

Why neutralise the urine when you can wash it out?  A good old soak and rinse off should flush the majority of it out, then just making sure it's healthy and doesn't smell will finish off the job.  If it's caused a yellowish stain you may well find it's permanent.

Different people will probably have different suggestions :)

Seem to be doing a grand job.

Cheers for all the help.
