grass and weeds growing in kiln dried sand in few weeks

i use b&q kiln dried sand after cleaning when joints are dry.  i leave the job tidy and looking like new but in a few weeks i notice grass starting to grow in some joints or even weeds sprouting up.  i know i could use weedkiller after cleaning like sodium chlorate but weeds should not grow in kiln dried sand as its sterilised sand/?

but on the other hand i know that when sand is wet "hydroponics" can occur were vegetation can grow in kiln dried sand when sand is wet.  someone said to me they use sand fromn the beach to brush into joints as its salt based so it deters weeds  but you see  loads of bushes and weeds near the beach growing in the sand??? ???

maybe weedkiller is only option othere than the dreaded sealing caper!! :-X

may not make a difference but i use wickes sand and the drives seem to be looking good for quite a while. probably worth a try.

Sodium chlorate should not be used as it is a banned chemical, due to serious health problems for adults and pets, and it stays active in the ground for up to 5 years and can seep into water courses. So if you have any get rid of it, its really nasty stuff.

It is not yet banned, neither for sale or use.

It is unsafe to pets, people etc. during application which is why care must be taken.

It does stay in the ground for a good while, that's the point surely, especially when preventing weed growth between blocks etc.

I am on the look out for a good quality replacement, as I am sure we all are. As yet I am advised (by an associate and owner of a very large and successful landscaping company) to continue to use whilst available as nothing performs anywhere near as well. He has tried several alternatives but describes them mostly in four letter words.

Not spoiling for an argument as I always respect your opinion but on this one your statement that it is already banned in incorrect.

Lime and vinegar,yes vinegar,both will work and will never get banned ;)
