Grr like a idiot today thought id be consructive in rain and was tidying van and moving stuff and put a new connector to the battery, like a div put the connectors wrong way round quickly without checking and i think ive fryed the varistream  took it apart and theres a capacitor cracked, do you think it can be repaired...what waste of money if it cant, i know its my on stupid fault.

I just pressed it and it flashe, so maybe its not a total loss, its only a circuit board at end of day init, new capacitor perhaps?

The fuse melted a while ago and i just wired it in to get on with work...as i said own stupid fault.

take the circuit board to Maplins and go to the components section at the back of the shop, and ask for another one of these please (show them the damaged capacitor) they should be able to identify what you need, You will need to un solder and re solder the new component in. Hope fully that will be the problem and you haven't cooked some other component too.

I used to do this practise all the time working in a night club on the lights.

Wot he said. A circuit board is only as stong as it's weakest component, once that component has blown there is no longer a circuit so therefore no further damage can be done.
Chaces are, if you replace that capacitor it should be ok, oh and if it is REPLACE THE FUSE.

Are you sure its a capacitor and not a diode. Remove the faulty component and see if it still works without it. A diode will be small about 10 mm with a wire out of each end and usually got a band around one end. A capacitor can be a different shape and usually bigger most with numbers like 104n or something like that printed on the outside. They can also be circular shape like a button. Put a photo on here and I'll tell you what it is.

PS Just saw your message. re  wiring out the fuse. OOPS not a good idea. Your goose could be cooked. Look at the other components like the ics. small flat bits with lots of legs, look to see if they have any burn marks or lumps. As they say when your let the smoke out, you're in trouble. : :

Surely its not worth the hastle of fixing it - a new Varistream is not thousands of pounds. By the time you have messed going to Maplins and then trying to fix it, you could have earned the money to buy a new one.
What happens if the components you buy don't work? You will have to replace it anyway. My advise is to 'bit the bullet' and order a replacement now - don't forget a box of 10amp fuses as well.

look at the markings on the capacitor Matt, desolder it and stick a new one in but the chances are its burnt something else out before the cap blew.
