How best to protect your van / equipment
« on: July 28, 2009, 02:30:35 pm »
After reading some alarming posts about theft of equipment on here recently, thought it would be a good topic to discuss.

Can anyone recommend an insurance company that offers insurance for equipment only ? Even if were not leaving kit in our vans over night, you can't rule out a daytime break in these days.

Who can recommend about alarms / quality locks or any other good theft deterants ?

I pay £52.50 / yr with Sun Alliance through Allied Insurance which covers up to £6k per claim and theft can be from anywhere (van, garage etc) with the proviso that it is locked 9pm - 6am.

Insurance wont stop them only possibly get you some new stuff back.

Rottweillers are a good deterent!

So is a Benelli 14 shot -pump action shot gun. You can't get any better form of security! Mind you getting out of the gun cabinet in time is another matter.

I’ve got no tools are left in this vehicle over-night, also tracker fitted, extra locks on all doors plus door handle covers, next will be film on the inside door windows advised it wont shatter if a hammer is used. Apart from that I’m very trusting  ;D

Auto or semi are band here!  :'( ;)

Len not if you hold an FAC. The Benilli 8 - 14 shot are legal and are on a section 1 if you belong to a club or have valid reason for one. I have a valid reason and belong to a club.

But I can alway resort to a Razini or Beretta.

Semi autos by the way are legal - Auto like a machine gun are section 5 and not for Public use. The ammo is also section 5.

Len,

FAC is a different licence correct. But Mullti shot shotgun (Which holds more than 3 cartridges) are classed as semi auto. Section 1 so require an FAC Fire Arms Certificate and do not go on a Shot Gun Licence, My Razzini and Baretta are on a shot gun licence.

Also they are O/U'S Over and Unders not side by side.

Just remember commercial insurance is on an indemnity basis not new for old. They will replace things at their current value. So if you loose a 2 year old porty you will recieve the perceived value not a brand new one. Worth bearing in mind.
Also don't forget to value your stuff accurately, if you under insure they can deny your claim or will only pay the percentage you insured at. What that means is if you have 10k worth of stuff and you take out 5k insurance and you loose the lot you will recieve 2.5k. Thats because you only covered yourself 50% and paid a lower premium, very important. I come across this all the time on fire & flood claims.

My wife was in the loss adjusters apartment where she worked for a couple of years and she said that if you are under insured that potentially they can refuse to pay out.
