Graig.
Best make your appologires to your customer first because spun jute fibre used as a surface yarn has a metalised finish which creates the luster when new, just normal wear and tear will reduce the appearance value by 75%, but they not expencesive, so the con men flog them as persians and we are left trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

IF... its a Jute rug and it sounds like it is and a trashed one at that, your on a hiding to nothing here.

Jutes a natural fibre it shrinks when wet, it stains very easily and using Vanish on it has damaged it beyond anything you could possibly do.

Unless she agrees you can attack it with every thing in your armoury to make some impression on it at her risk and expense I'd walk away from it and tell her it is beyond restoration.

Let some one as experienced as Sherlock take it on and hot water extract it after applying any old pre-spray. ::)

Woodman says walk away ;D

have to say for "one so well versed" your reply sherlock, leaves me lost for words!!!

as per what trevor(woodman) says just walk away, you will be opening a minefield here.

A jute rug is just not worth cleaning, and it will shrink, and curl.

I am with woodman,

Sherlock  - you have slipped up, again, your method would cause no end of problems. Maybe its time to stop mucking about and come clean about yourself. I am starting to think you have been cleaning since last month and own a mop and bucket. Not someone with staff and a big turnover.

Anyone know Sherlock and his company? or do we have a member of the general public just winding us up?

I have cleaned a jute rug!

But only did this once :o
Brown band appeared where it had been hung on rail.
Cost me 30 quid in de browning chems and about 2.5 hours in time, not to mention the worry.

Not worth the hastle.

I was under the impression that jute itself doesn't shrink. Infact i thought that it absorbs water and expands and this pulls the weave of the carpet tight which is where the shrinkage comes in!

Thats just what i thought!

Goron,
You are absolutely correct, however of course if the jute is intertwined (Woven) in the make up of the rug or backing, the expansion will also cause a shortening effect.

Hi Guys.
Everybody is singing from the same hymn sheet about jute, but the qualitys are so vast, it holds together the backing weave of Woodward Grosvenors Wilton at £140 per sq. yd. and the Belgian Wiltons at £10 per sq. yd.

Barry. I difference in a jute rug and the jute on the backing of a rug are different. Thats is craig has been asked to clean a jute rug, ( a rug constructed of jute) not a backing of a carpet.

Interesting idea Ian, never thought he could be one of us, just having a wind up, clever if he is though. Is Sherlock that clever, I fear another catch 22.

Karl.
In Asia, Jute is in abundance and in the short term as a woven flatweave product it serves well but as a a surface pile it is only a substitute, and poor one at that, where is there a good word of support for Jute in any of the other repy's.
