warning do not use any domain supply comanys to search if a name is available, they have a tracking system and keep all the suggested names, in some cases folk have punched in the name, it was available, by the time they went to get there card, the company had registered the name themselfs and put a high price on it, godaddy is the worse, just use your nternet browser, if its not there, chances are it is available,

if you need a nice new fancy name for your website, and you have come up with a name, you would naturly search on a domain hosting site like 123 freeparking and many more, well you put the name into the search directory they would come back with the results, available or taken,  a lot of them are now using tracking systems built into there site and then steal the name, godaddy.com is the top no1 for doing this, so if you need to see if the name is available put your name into your browser, if no website shows up, the chances are it is available, seems the only way to do a search without being tracked and the name stolen

I first heard something about this practice some years ago.  It sounds like very bad form to me.
Possibly the best way to search would be via Nominet's own website at

http://www.nominet.org.uk/

They hold the details of registered domains and return a "no match" result for domains that are unregistered.
As far as i know, they just hold the data and don't sell the domains so presumably have no reason to behave in the manner that you mentioned.
Surfing to a particular domain is not completely reliable as someone may own the domain name but hasn't started using it yet.

there name is bad every where you look, theres milloins of pounds to be made and what better way to do this is track your search, saves them looking, and ifyour wondering how i came up with this topic, they stole my buisness name www.brighterclean.co.uk and sold it, click on my link and see where it goes, and am fighting with them now, seems there is not a lot i can do,

What are we talking about here business names or website addresses?  If you are registered as a sole trader you can call your company what you like within reason providing no one within the area has the same name - this is what I have been told.  As for the domain website address best to use National Business Register, pay the £85.00, register the website address if available i.e. same or very similar to your business name and you should not have any problems for example if you have a website address with your company name which means the website address is not available or you will have to choose a different ending i.e. .co.uk or .com or .org.  The only way you can protect your name full stop is to register it as a limited company or as a sole trader with a dormant domain name.

i bought the name less than a year ago,  so when i was ready i could use it for my website,  looks like i will need to change it to some thing else now    i spoke to the new owner about it, he said he has all his signs and stuff already made and cost him a few bob, so would not be worth while selling me my on name back,
