carbon pole for newbie-too much too soon??
« on: July 19, 2009, 04:11:33 pm »
me again!!

after struggling for a couple of weeks with my hydrapole, and really feeling the effects, sore joints and back, and not confident in its ability to reach places without a real battle against it...is the step to an slx too much too soon?

i am worried i may break it, or if indeed it will make enough difference to warrant the money?

any thoughts?

matt

Concept....Over the years you are going to move that pole up/down/sideways tens of thousands of time...this will all take a hit on your body...whether you go down to DIY route or get yourself a SL-X or other carbon fibre pole...you'll thank yourself for taking care of your body...

When I first started only a couple of years ago...I used a glass fibre 24ft pole for about 6 weeks and thought 'I want something lighter'...I bought a 44ft c/f Facelift and used only the sections I needed for the job in hand...this I used for about 90 odd weeks then I got the mk1 SL-X ....thank the maker for carbon fibre.

At the end of the day the pole and brush head are your bread and butter and you'll have these items in your hands for many hours each day...do your body a favour and buy the best your can afford right now...

Cheers
Dave....

I have an SLX, you wont regret spending the money on it. I used to go through 2 xtels a year, good pole, but no good over 18ft. I then bit the bullet and bought an SLX, had it 17-18 months now, very little sign of wear. Use it everyday on tops and bottoms, i have the 25ft one, reaches 3rd stories and for those windows over conservatories. If i was going to get another, go for the 30ft one.

thanks for the responses guys, really appreciate it, and just confirming in my mind that it would make enough of a difference. only been at it a couple of weeks, and my body is killing me, can't believe it, as i am as fit as a fiddle, and strong too. really hit me quite hard this, and i dont want to lose motivation by feeling sore all the while and not wanting to go out.

In all honesty..you are using your muscles differently than you have before..lets face it...when did you last spend a couple of hours looking directly up swinging a pole around...I found in the 1st 6 weeks I had a lot of pain in my neck..most of these ache and pains have now faded away...but a decent weight pole and brush will help no end.

Good luck
Dave.

Totally correct, you are using muscles you have not used or worked this way before on a constant level.

Get some pain killing gel like ibuleve to help your muscles recover and have warm baths and remember to stretch before, during and after your days work, like you would if you have done any proper exercise.

after time your muscles will get used to the work and the range of motion it requires, and you wont notice anything.

Like Dave said you get used to it, you will even notice your body shape changes - well defined shoulders. The neck ache reduces in time as do the burning biceps. However I would recommend spending your money on the stiffest lightest pole you can get with the lightest brush too. Fishing poles are brilliant for the money but if you can afford an SLX then go for it you will never regret it.

What was wrong with the Harris? I have found it to be lighter than most. I have an SL2 but use the Harris for everything I can reach with it. The Ron Thomson fishing pole stays in the van

A good swivel takes up a lot of the strain, you can stand in the most comfortable position for you,
you don't have to stand with the pole at arms length while your trying to get the brush into a difficult corner.
Use the lightest brush you can find, the superlite  or Bentley use Algarde 6mm aquarium  hose  on your pole, you can stretch it over the snap on connectors, the bore is only 4mm, that makes for a lot less weight of water running up your pole.

Best advice for your body is to alternate hands , that sounds like a double entand'e
dont look who's to blame, look how to fix it. anon
