started up this morning and get the message:

cannot open outlook  etc etc  trouble with files, use download repair tool from scanpst.exe to repair

that's ok scanpst.exe finds what it says are faults but you have to buy the full version at $125 to fix the errors!!
it could be that scanpst put the trouble there in the first place,

any ideas,  could i re-install outlook to over-ride existing?

This is one of the best anti malware removal tools about.

Scanpst.exe is part of Microsoft office and appears on the first disk. It does not cost anything as it's part
of Office. I suspect a trojan exploit has attached itself to Outlook.exe and runs first to block the program
and direct you to a nefarious site, where you will be conned out of copious amounts of money.

read this and it will show you how to repair a problem with outlook, but first use Malwarebytes, as i suspect there is nothing wrong with outlook.
