VW T5 or Renault Traffic
« on: July 16, 2009, 04:17:12 pm »
I've got to the stage where I have outgrown my litttle Pug Partner van ( a little too quickly for my liking), and now I need something with more floor space, greater payload, and a tad more power.

I've owned a 2.5 T4 before, and never had any trouble with it, and liked the size.

But them T5's are not cheap !, but look lovely vans and would be my first choice if cost was not an issue.

Is the 104bhp T5 strong enough to handle 800 odd kilos on a daily basis on country hilly roads?

So, I've looking also at the Renault Traffic & Vauxhall / Nissan equivalents.  They look similar to the T5 in floorspace, Payloads are good, and engines look strong enough to handle the weight - and they are selling for a lot less then the T5's.

Not having owned a Renault before.

Are they any good?

Whats the build quality like, and are the engines reliable?

My experience of VW is that they are lovely vehicles to drive, how do the Renaults compare?

I'm prepared to pay a bit more for a van, but need something thats going to last for at least 5 years.

I did consider leasing, but I'm not sure I'd really benefit from any tax savings, so I think I opt for buying outright, and running it until it becomes uneconomical to do so.

Sorry for so many questions, but would appreciate any folks experiences and opinions. :)

VW - made of metal and durable stuff.

Renault - made of cheese and plastic.
It's a game of three halves!

T5 great vans. The 104bhp model will easily haul 800kg around Cornwall. I have this model with a 700litre tank and it never feels under powered.

The T5's make great contract hire vehicles as they have a good resale value. There are also some good purchase deals around. A friend of mine has just bought a T28 102PS panel van - 08 plate, 17,000 miles for £10,500 (inc VAT). I regularly see 55 plate vans for £4000-5000.

If you change your mind and buy a Trafic, put some money aside for gearbox changes as part of the 18,000 mile services.

My T5 T30 shifts (90mph allegedly) with a 650 tank, heater, 30ft ladder and bits and bobs in it. Very economical on fuel and no plasticky feel about it inside the cab.

in reference to the gear box problems regarding the vivaro/traffic/primster that would depend on its age. yes they did have major problems up till 06 reg but the changed there manufacture and seem to have it all sorted now.

Quite possibly.  Mine's an 03 plate and the gearbox didn't even manage 40,000.  Saying it was part of the 18,000 mile service was a bit of exagerated humour but 40,000 is still too few miles.
When the time come to replace my current van, it has put me right off going the Trafic/Vivaro/Primastar route even if that problem has been sorted.  I've always had my best time with vehicles when I've gone Japanese.  I won't be in the market for another van for quite a while but when I am, it will be a Jap one I think.

Just thought of another van - This is what I would be getting if I did not have a T5.
The new Hyundai H100, very smart (looks a bit like a T5-Vito cross), good spec and 5 year 100,000 warranty.

My 2 year old T5 was in the VW garage this morning having a new clutch fitted for £600+VAT as the old clutch was burnt out from the previous owner I bought it from. What a lovely surprise when they said "no charge as it's covered under the warranty". Good reason to have the rest of the day off. :)
