Hello everyone my name is Jason and I run an oven cleaning business in Birmingham called Captain J's Oven Cleaning. Have had a look at the forum and although it seems mainly for carpet cleaning I hope that I can be of assistance to people here as well as receive assistance. Would like to take this opportunity to ask how people are finding things out there - myself I was rushed off my feet for the last few weeks but now suddenly nothing only people ringing asking for price and nothing else.

Like last year, (My first year) the holidays are looking busy for me. I also do oven cleaning as well as C/Cing and I'm getting a pretty equal ammount of jobs for both.

do any of you guys deal with letting agents and if so how did you entice them? I.e offer a discount or cut of the clean price. My problem is there are 4 or 5 of us around here and I'm the newest so I'm trying to entice there regulars away but don't want to do it on price alone.

When I was starting up a local Carpet Cleaner said to me that there's plenty of work to go round, and he's right. I wouldn't actively seek to steal other operators work incase you don't do such a good job and end up getting a bad name for yourself. Let the business build up as "Naturally" as you can and 'wow' the customers you do get. In time, if you're better than the competion then word will get around and then success will eventually come.

There's one  letting agent around here that thinks that my chemicals come direct from a chemical fairy, that my equipment was free and I should be charging (And I quote) "Just above minimum wage"

I know what you mean there Colin, round my my they seem to want them done for peanuts and make you wait at least 30 days for ya money, i dont even bother with them now.

Captain J - good advice there from Colin, dont try to steal your competitions regulars you'll only get a name for yourself etc etc, theres plenty of ovens matey, just keep marketing and doing the best job you can and it will come for ya, also offer other services as well more strings to the old bow etc.

Best of luck with that one. I heard that some oven cleaners book the next clean for the client as and when they complete the existing cleaning, so therefore they are quite likely to stay put.

Also, given that the customer is not likely to need an oven clean for about 6 months following the last, you may be waiting around for a bit.

I kind-of think that the concept of oven cleaning is still rather modern and hasn't hit home yet. Its the sort of thing which i think leafleting may help with maybe, you know, selling the whole idea as well as selling yourself. My own oven cleaners was found by word of mouth and i wouldn't swap them for anything as they are excellent.
