Had an enquiry from a nursing home recently and they asked did I have a police check. How do you get one and is there an official title for it?

Depends where you're located as it's slightly different in England to Scotland and possibly Ireland

Look under police check and you will get loads coming up.

In Scotland it's called a disclosure and costs about £20 and normally takes about two weeks but can vary enormously.

It's YOUR document and comes to your address. There are are two levels......basic and enhanced, the latter goes back further and gives more detail if there's any to give.

We only use enhanced in our business.

Go for the disclosure Neil - I had to get one when I applied for inclusion on the Councils approved trader scheme.

Google Disclosure Scotland, you can fill out the form online it was £20 per search but they were raising this to £25, you can pay by Debit or Credit card, they give you a Disclosure Number and you have to give 2 proofs of ID which you can Fax to them or Post and in my case it took 5 days all in all.

Bit strong John  :),Neil was only quoting from the CRB website-
"The current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check on themselves."
According to them it seems whoever is requesting a check on you has to apply.

there is a standard/enhanced CRB check, then there is a full background police check, which also invloves your family etc back a few generations.

I think you prob need the crb.

you can get a crb done yourself by using a local umbrella orginsations, check the crb website for full details. However if its a nursing home they might do one for you.

Nursing homes or any other employer CANNOT do one for you ! It's something you have to apply for yourself and it comes to your home address.

We started police checks which became disclosures 8 years ago before they became mandatory.

We can and do supply employees with forms but THEY must complete and send in the forms and the disclosure document is returned to their home address.

I have one as I must, but the local authority don't even want to see it

Sorry  ;D  I know Neil well and I'm sure he'll realise that I didn't mean he was talking b******s just that what was on the site was b******s!! I'm self-employed and I applied for my own status.  Of course, it may have changed since I applied or the procedure may be different elsewhere other than England?

Hi Neil:

When you say you are from the North of Ireland do you mean Donegal, Sligo etc... or do you mean Northern Ireland?.

If you're from Northern Ireland then your're correct for searching the CRB is the correct website as Northern ireland will fall under its "Juristiction".

However if you're from the Republic of Ireland then you'll need to find their equivalent which Im sorry I don't have to hand.

All the best

Will
