Blood, lots of it on a carpet....
« on: June 07, 2009, 12:09:07 pm »
I was called out on Friday where after a week, the customer decided that the one and a half pints of blood on  her stairs and landing needed to be cleaned up....

Donning my rubber gloves and mask, I got to work and it came up very well apart from a few stains that just wouldn't budge. I've been back today and as expected, a lot of blood has wicked back and it looks pretty grim. I've told her that the next option would be to take the carpet up and clean the back as well as the pile again and get it refitted by a carpet fitter and that it would be cheaper to buy a new carpet.

By the way, she'd stood on a broken wine glass when she was drunk in case you're wondering ::)

Next time I'll leave this sort of work well alone I think, it nearly put me off my beer!

Hi

Colin, did you pre-spray with a biocide and leave a 15 mins dwell time?

Blood as you probably know if a pathogen, so please make sure you decontaminate your machine after, extract the blood with cold water, not hot, as stated if it is still coming out you will need to pull up and clean underneath, a 10p size blood spill can be dinner plate size underneath.

Best of luck

Thank you for the advice Martin,

I didn't prespray with biocide but i did rinse with cold water.... To be honest, I should have walked away from the job when I seen the severity of the staining.

I used Stain Pro and Rust remover as suggested by prochem.... It did the trick but I knew I was out of my depth doing this job....

I have cleaned my machine with a detergent I use for disinfecting the dog kennel, but what's the best chemical to use?

Hi Colin

You can use Microsan or you can use ordinary Biological washing liquid.

Biological liquid contains Protease which breaks down proteins, protease refers to a group of enzymes including alcalase, savinase, esperase.

Proteases differ in their ability to hydrolyse (break down) various peptide bonds. Each type of protease has a specific kind of peptide bond it breaks. These enzymes convert their substrates into small, readily soluble fragments which can be removed easily from fabrics.

Alcalase: a proteolytic enzyme (one subset of protease) designed to hydrolyse all kinds of proteins including haemoglobin. Thus it is helpful in the removal of bloodstains as haemoglobin is the main component of red blood cells. Alcalase is readily soluble in water at all reasonable use concentrations. Alcalase is active in the hydrolysis of a wide variety of proteins.

Savinase and esperase are other subsets of protease used to remove protein stains.

Biological washing liquid also contains cellulose to break down the cell wall

You may even be able to flood the contaminated area with a biological solution (cold) and then suck it all out.

I have started using biological washing liquid in my EOT cleans, diluted into a spray bottle and it brings surfaces up a treat and well as removing tough stains it kills the bacteria.
