Why do I feel guilty?/Would I make a good MP?
« on: May 15, 2009, 07:57:11 am »
Day before yesterday I did this 1800's house in the country which has a footpath/green lane running right against it's boundary and from which I do one side of the house.

The housewall then becomes the garden wall and runs for about 30 yards along the lane.

After the edge of the house/join with the garden wall is a gate/door that I use to access the rest of the property grounds. To make it easier on hose tugging I walk past the door down the lane to the end of the garden and walk back through the door with hose in tow.

At the end of the garden, in the lane outside the boundary was a couple of old rotten fence posts/stakes and one was particularly tatty but dry. Oh, thinks I - I'll have that for the log burner. I'm looking at it to pick it up when custy pops his head over the wall and asks if I'm ok (in a polite "what are you up to?" sort of manner).

Me:- "Fine I was going to have this for my logburner"
Him: "I'm going to use those next bankholiday for a job in the garden"
Me: "Oh sorry - I didn't realise thay were yours - I'll leave them alone"

I felt really guilty over a rotten bit of wood that wasn't even in his garden!

Do you think I would make a good MP?
It's a game of three halves!

No.  You should have taken it before he noticed, used it, waited until he discovered it was missing, then put a note of public apology in your local post office village store offering to give him back the ashes.

Your guilt may be genetic, but the current outrage is not over the fact that most human beings are hypocrites to a greater or lesser degree, but over the sanctimony of their dictating to us in a holier than though fashion but having their snouts in the trough at the same time.

Hazel Bliers really winds me up because of her 'i acted within the rules'.At least the tory who has resigned after taking us for a quarter of a million admitts he's a crook.

You would be a useless MP then.
If you were an MP you would have taken it while his back was turned.  If discovered, you would have told him that he must have imagined the conversation and that you burned it to save on other fossil fuels.  You would then have sent him a bill for doing the world a favour.
Alternatively, you would have let him have it.  You would then have put in a higher expenses account bill for the extra fuel you needed to replace it.  If found out, you would have repaid the money and publicly grovelled followed by resigning and starting a window cleaning business.

George Orwell's book Animal Farm explains everything you need to know about politicians, government in general.

"Are animals are equal, but some are more equal than others" says it all really.

But to be honest, who wouldn't in a position of power abuse that position to get things cheap or on the free..

The sad truth of the matter is that given the peer pressure, and the existing climate on claiming expenses is that 99% of us would have done the same as them.
"Are you sure I can claim for that? You certainly can old boy, it's all within the rules, well if your sure.
And that, my friends is all that it takes for 99% of us.
You can only trust integrity when a person refrains from going against their conscience, even if they are absolutely certain they would never be found out.
