can you guys give me some advice on these things is there one you dont need an operator licence for and if so to what hight  and if not how much is it to go through a operator licence ...help shine a light over here

you need a licence for any c.picker / s/lift unless you go for the larger lorry mounts which come with a driver, tho they are expensive (90foot quoted me last week 575.00 a day) if you want a licence its around 150.00 and takes a day to do

Not strictly true you can hire one from toucan hire I think they are either 12m or 14m lifts and you don't need a licence, Ive used them a few times now

You can rent a 20m z20 from Smart Platform, they give you a training lesson of 30 minutes before you drive it away.

They also offer IPAF training courses which are valid for 5 years before ou need to renew them.

not sureabout then letting you take out a machine after 30mins training but (and i may be wrong)its your responsibillity and not the hire companies to make sure you are trained and have the specific licences to satisfy site needs aswell as your insurance needs, i say this as when we 1str hired we didnt have a licence but hire company said nop probs if we are prepared to take a chance, it was upto us to have licence and not for them to check, happy to be put right if i am wrong but info going on past experiance

My understanding is that you do not have to have a licence (IPAF or otherwise) to hire such equipment. However it may well be a condition of the person/company that you are working for that you are suitably qualified. The insurance implications are fairly obvious. So, if you intend to do a fair amount of this work, I would have thought a licence would be a sound investment. About £200 i think.

If you do this kind of work it should cover the £200 cost within the first 1 or 2 jobs, it is essential to know wind speed, ground balance etc etc, i wouldn't personally use platforms without one!!
