What do YOU do when it's raining?
« on: May 08, 2009, 06:45:57 pm »
I'm very new to window cleaning only just started this year and it's going Absolutley fantastic, wish I'd odne it years ago. I live on border of Lancashire/Yorkshire/Cumbria so quite rural.

I just wanted to know what everyone does when it's raining hard?

Do you just put on waterproofs and carry on regardless, if so what do your customers say, do they mind or complain?

. . . . . or. . . . do you pack up and go hope and lose money?

I'd love to know what you all do in different parts of the country.

I tend to go home and read about licensing, harris poles and maybe a little on patches.

Light to medium rain I work on...when it starts bouncing off the road...I'll stop watch and if it gets worse...go home.

If i am already working then i work in light to medium rain to complete a block of work

If its before i have left for work then only if its spitting to light rain

Never work in heavy rain generally though heavy rain doesnt last too long and if it does i have enough gaps over the month to catch up

It used to be that i never worked in any rain and i was dead against it but you just cant afford to do that if you want to run a successful and profitable business

Resi - If im behind i get on with it.. if my custies are going to be out, do it regardless - i will return if there is a dis satisfaction with the clean.

If they are in, then its up to them.. some dont care, some only when its good - although obviously they get missed, or if i have time another day i will go back if local - they are ok with this arrangement.

Commercial - just get on with it.. i have a contract which says i must clean them, they didn;t stipulate in fine weather only :P

Go home. Pretty sure most customers dont want windows cleaned in the rain and I am certain I don't like getting soaked and still working

for me there's two types of rain.

rain you can work in and rain you can't.

basically i would work in fine rain,  basically the type where you'd have intermintent wind screen wipers on van.

you should base your work on a four day week.

i have a must earn wage, which i nearly always earn, as said because my works based over 4 days.( x amount a week/ 4 days) once this is reached, i still keep going.

some weeks i work 6 days (saturdays 10.30ish til say 2pm)
I just keep going while weathers o.k but never work sundays!
you never know what's around the corner i lost a weeks work in feb due to snow.
I see w/c's out there on ladders in snow-ice :o

my mrs friend went out in snow on day 1 slipped over broke her ankle, didn't set right, still off work now. :'(

It's all about getting price's right, but this will be determined by where you live.

I charge £12 average for 3 bed semi, but have heard others do the same for £6 or less

when you first start you'l under price, can't be helped :(

you need to sit down and do some number crunching with the calculator.

I've been given advice by others that i found to be true always charge a third more than you want to earn an hour as there is alot of time lost in van/car to-ing and thro-ing.

I'd say the ave is £20 an hour, but this will be determined as said on location; prices.

if you can't achieve this rate running a monthly round then extend the clean date out to allow room to charge more i.e 6 weeks or 8 weeks(max) this will only really work if your wfp (imo)

sorry i've rambled on.
I don't work in rain because (IMO) custy's don't like it
i don't like getting wet if i was honest.

but some on here do work in rain up to you ;)

It's not how many days you work; but how much you earn in the days you do :)

good luck mate

I tell my customers from the begining that I clean in light to medium rain, I also tell them it makes no difference if they are cleaned in the rain or cleaned then it rains afterwards as the only marks left will be rains marks.
I had several customers gobsmacked the other week when I turned up and it was light rain. they said your not cleaning today are you? I replied yes I have a living to make and that it doesnt make any difference, the cheeky buggers asked me to go round in a few days, I told them they either get cleaned that day or they will have to wait and see if I could fit them in otherwise it would be 4 weeks time when I come again. They must think we only work 4 hours a day, GGRRRR
Sorry about the griping lol  :P

I carry on if it's light rain, or if the rain is not hitting the windows. If it's any heavier I sit it out in the van. If looks as if it's in for the day I will either go home, or if I have any gutter or fascia cleans to do I will do them instead.

Do a few quotes, sit outside mcdonalds drinking milkshake, pop in wickes and buy spare Hozelock fittings, walk round Dixons fending off the sales staff.
Catch up with paper work, do crossword/sudoku and finally fall asleep.
Rush out of van as rain stops, only to get half way through before it starts again.
Go home and get stuck into decorating son's bedroom, asking for help from said son, who suddenly develops stone deafness.
Sit down in front of computer trying to dream up wise or witty replies to Posts.
