Can anyone tell me wether i need employers liability for my father in law

he works for me one day a week , uses his own van and set up and has his own work rest of week.

+ has his own public liability insurance.

So hes a sub contractor, you will need to have subcontractors insurance I believe

You don't need ELI for him if he is a subbie. But you should make sure that his PLI is the same value or greater than your own. If it is less and he has an accident when working for you then it can cause problems with the insurance company.

get him to go self emplyed and you giv ehim some work and get  a cut from it.

If they are working FOR (be it employed by you, or on a sub contractor basis) your company then they need to be covered by your insurance.

If they are working for themselves (under their own company/name) then their own PL insurance is fine.

So if you GIVE them work to do for their company then you dont need to do anything (better advise your customers first someone else is doing the work), but if they are working under your name you need to get insurance for them.

Oh, and in any case - check with your insurance company if you are unsure.

My lad will be finishing collage for the summer soon and is rubbing his hands together at the thought of coming out at weekends to help Dad with the Con cleans etc. He's been with me a couple of times just as a go-fer and gave him a few bob.

He 18 nearly now so can get his hands dirty. So whats the script? Do I need ELI for what is casual labour. If so what does it cost?

Most Insurance companies won't allow you to take out  E/L insurance for family members. I tried many times to add my son and always refused

hes a close family member so you dont need employers, best to check though

Is a father in law not a close family member?
