"links"
« on: May 04, 2009, 10:23:43 pm »
Hi, just wondered how you go about linking websites to your site?  I've just built one on vistaprint & believe to get ranked higher with the top search engines you should link with other sites, do you need permission of these sites to add your site to theirs?

Hi Nat,

Links will help you rank higher. Yes you need permission. You can have as many links from your site to anyone elses site. You do not need permission for that.

But the links to other sites from your website will not rank you. You need "RELEVANT" links. So if someone has a site on car mechanics and a link to your site that will not help.

You need a link from a cleaning site to your site.

Resoprical links. That where you put up a link. And they put up your link. Now if people actually research that does not help either. Google marks you down and says you are cheating.

The links you need are from a cleaning site direct to yours only.

I would agree that quality is better than quantity, but even if the site has no relevance you still get a link that is recognised by googlebot and other spiders.  I think the best way to start out is to submit to directories.  You can submit into a category that is relevant to cleaning.  I would suggest a semi automated directory submitter to get it done quick and efficiently.

alright, this will take some time in explaining espcially if you are not any good! Sorry to be blunt. You cant be that bad you have a reasonable website infact I would say as its your first one its brilliant.

Anyway back at the subject at hand.

Ok you need several things to help get ranked! You need a site map.

How do I create those I hear you ask. Go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

Follow instuctions, download the xml file and save it to your pc. Get a back up so you dont lose it. Oh remember this -  if you add pages to your site, they will not be in yor site map so you need to update it. Create another one.

Go to Google, create an account. In other words you need to register. Once you have done that, you go to the webmaster tools section, known as your dashboard. You then need to verify that the website is owned by you. It will get you to enter the URL of the site, and ask you to download or create an XML FILE with the specila code that will be provide. Generally it done in Notepad saved as what Google tells you to save it As. ie ... 67866965hkhk.xml

You then need to save this file. On your website. Another question.

Well, thats tricky as I am assuming you did it via that control and you didnt need to do any FTP File Transfer Protacol.

I am not familiar with Vistaprint website setups. You need to check if you can do FTP. If you can than you need the IP addresses and passwords so you can access the site via FTP. If you cant google may allow you to save a peice of code in a certain area of your pages.

Let me know if you can do FTP. I will explain how its done. Dont panic its not difficult. But you do require an FTP PROGRAM. Its basically uploading and downloading of files direct to the server where your website is kept.

Once that fileis on your server, go back to webmaster tools and get google to verify the file is there. Once they find it it will be verified and you can then play about with the settings on Google.

Let me know and we can move on.

I hope this has been of some help.

Many thanks Dave will have a bash at that & let you know how I get on, the other option given by Google was to add "meta tags" anyhow, will try this option first. Thanks for the positive feedback re my site, I suppose it's not that bad for a 1st attempt :)

If you can add a meta tag, that will be far simpler than FTP however the page has to exist! Meta tags should not require FTP.

OK thought this would be the case! This is what happens when you choose cheap options. Sorry!

So the alternative would be to place a meta tag on the page. So question 1.

1. What page can you put the meta tag ie Home, Contact Us or other?

I would assume it will be placed on the Home page. Thats the first page of your web site.

To place a meta tag which is a small line of code normally at the top of the page.
for example -

meta name="keywords" content="cleaning equipment, cleaning supplies, Domestic cleaning Kent, UK" />

Now you shouldnt need to worry about the code as Google probably will supply it.

Now if you cant add a meta tag then you will have an issue. The coding is known as HTML. So see if you can spot somewhere that says VEIW as HTML and you should be able to do it otherwise you cant.
I knw you may not want to hear this, but if you cant do either of these with VistaPrint see if you can leave them... as you can get better deals with Fasthosts and have a wide variety oof access FTP / HTML BLA BLAH BLAH LIST GOES ON AND ON.

The only other alterative is if you cant do it, Do you know any one that could access your website and do it for you.
