The one I would be focusing my attention on is Carpet Cleaning Devon which but it's maybe too early to judge

Hi Richard I'm not sure people would type in 'carpet cleaning - 'north devon'. People search for the area they generally live in so whichever area in Devon you live in type that in and see where you come.
eg. Nearest large town to me is Ipswich but we do a lot of work in Kesgrave so people will search
Carpet Cleaning Kesgrave

Barbara

Do you targetr the kesgrove area as think it might be like here in cheshire and i get most of my work from stockport ???

i agree derek and clinton.

barbara although i take on board what you are saying but devon its a little more determined by population density its such a large spread about county. so putting keywords like carpet cleaning barnstaple , bideford are not goin to get me too far. found that on my addwords have been running for 6 months. but saying that carpet cleaning exeter does quite well with the clicks but is the other end of the county so bit far. ( put that keyword in as experiment to answer exactly the point you brought up for myself)

Richard

So really you mean you caint just have carpet cleaner devon as your name then and seo ???

I got that cheshire site done for a 100 pounds well over a year ago and it still gets me some good paying work and its never been touched in a year and still keeps high on google  ::)

maybe there's more people in Exeter searching for carpet cleaning, I really do think people search for services in their local area by its name - not north or south - or am I missing something  ???

The net is no different to business offline - it finds its own level.

Nobody, or hardly anybody searches for the terms you are no1 on and you are number one because you have no competition.

On the other hand CC Devon would be a very tough nut to crack because your competition and probably Doug Holloway ;D will all be after top spot, although I bet even on that there are only 10-15 searches per day.

To do well you either have to spend a lot of time or money or be very very lucky where you live.

Ideally before you get any SEO paid for you need to know what the likely yield is, the amount, and strength of your comp.

This means knowing the number of clicks per day on your chosen keyword, how well your comp's site is optimised and the quantity and quality of their backlinks.

If I bought SEO work I would base it on clicks rather than position, but I doubt they woukd be interested cos there is so many easy pickings out there for people who haven't got a clue.

How much Mike? You would lose big time.
I did the site thats No1 for Devon and North Devon (Ian Harman's site, Amethyst)
As Ian will tell you, results are disappointing. It just dont work in a hell of a lot of areas.
Richard, your money would be spent better elsewhere.
Good Luck.
Barbara, will try to call you tomorrow.

On average there are 16 google searches per day on carpet cleaning Devon. There are lots of different ways a site generates traffic, it's not all down to one keyword phrase, as you know.
