OK so the way I see it, quite rightly we focus on something like carpet cleaner weston or carpet cleaning bristol or whatever

This in theory gives you the biggest trawl for your efforts.

But unless you live in a bristol, london or manchester you probably will only get 2-3 clicks per day on your site from someone who typed that phrase into google.

So you can expand it to county level but the problem with that is every other bugger is doing that, which isn't a problem if you have time, money and knowhow.

So that's why you need to do seperate pages for rugs, leather etc, but you can go on and on picking up the odd phrase here and there until you have say 20 -50 phrases that yield a hit on your site.

The shortcut route of course is PPC but that's something you will get stung on if you take your eye off the ball.

So basically it's all nice having someone doing a site for you CC area.co.uk but even position 1 on google doesn't mean you can throw the leaflets away just yet.

I do pay per click and basically if you type anything to do with carpet cleaning within the area I've stipulated I will come up, I have 100s of keywords

i've got a number of campaigns running, I have a 'home improvement campaign' which if anyone searches for plumbing, decorating etc I will come up,

I have sometimes 2-3 listings on google maps.

in the last 3months I've not had one job, this month I've had 2 clicks costing me just under a fiver.

it can't be that I've got a crap website because I'm not even getting people to visit it.

Dave

I have half a dozen sites and they are all pretty boring to be honest and there's nothing to learn from them.

If you want to improve conversion then change and test one thing and one thing only on your site.

Top adwords users will pay a lot less than 10p a click and get the people they want. Don't ask me how cos I don't know.

Derek, I'm trying to remember our conversation, i think we must have been talking about impressions which is at 217,000!!

this is my stats from the day I started;

 Commercial no1  Active  £5.00 / day  20 75,212 0.03%  £1.38 £27.53
  Campaign #1  Active  £5.00 / day  48 141,459 0.03%  £1.04 £49.70
  decorator Campaign #2  Active  £5.00 / day  0 1,119 0.00%  - £0.00
  Total - all 3 Campaigns - £15.00 / day  ( 3 active campaigns )  68 217,790 0.03% £1.14 £77.23

my first month was the best for clicks but I put this down to other carpet cleaners or companies just checking out my website, this month only 2 clicks with the exact same campaign I have in February were I got 48 clicks ( but still no jobs)

at one piont I had my cost at £2.50 per click

Derek, I did my own campaigns but I can't see how there can be any skill needed to increase response, after all you can have as many search terms as you like, its not like organic listing were you have to have certain things within your website to rate highly.

I'm in the top 3 no matter what they type.

if there is any magic terms that make the phone ring let me know.

BUT!!!!!

Just to add, I set the region to within 10miles of my house, so it could be said I limit my response because of that, but I'd still expect a couple of jobs

Where do they key phrases need to be?
On your website or in your actual Google advert?

I know you need to constantly keep reviewing the content of the actual website - google likes 'active' sites and after a while if a site has stayed the same then it will see it as less current and therefore less relavent than a company making constant changes to their website. What some people do is add a page a month or something - maybe an area every month so that the website is seen as dynamic (changing) and not static.

In saying that it shouldn't make any difference for PPC as you're paying for the leads and i didnt think web content really had any effect? I could very well be wrong though... don't quote me!
