Undercutting or just stupid ?
« on: April 02, 2009, 04:52:20 pm »
Started cleaning the windows on my third pub of the morning, manager came out said "coffee ? " . I never turn that down.

Anyway 5 minutes later he came out with coffee and bacon roll ( lovely) .

He said he had 2 window cleaners that had come in the last 2 days wanting the job of cleaning the windows.

1st one he just told no, 2nd one he said, would not stop talking and even offered to do the job for £10 a week in and out. Manager just laughed and told him to take run and jump.

I admit i will do anything if i had no work, just so i did not loose my house and everything else i have worked for, I would undercut if i had to get more work

I have been doing these windows for 9 years and to give you idea of the job I charge £48.00 for the job every week, so are  these window cleaners UNDER CUTTING OR STUPID.

How can they even be legal..?

sign of the times
we were asked to quote for a pub and rooms above ,they said they were looking to change as the other cleaner was to expensive .
quoted in and out every fortnight £100
this might sound a lot but it is a reasonable size job
the guy just laughed and said they were only paying £70 a month and they thought that was to much , i know we priced it right as we have other work on a par with this job
Its good that you guy is loyal and you have a good re-pore with him

I don't think it's stupidity.  Just a lack of knowledge.

Some people dont mind undercutting to get a job. I myself ask if they need a window cleaner... if i find out that they have i leave a leaflet and say if they let you down i will quote. Its called karma... what goes around comes around in my opinion
Only those who risk going too far will truly know how far they can actually go

Karma is spot on, I had some lads using bad tactics trying to get some of my work, didnt lose one too them but just picked up a £150 a 8 weekly contract from them.

know the feeling. Priced a job the other day, got told on the phone that day " Had another guy quote after you and he was cheaper...." Must of been waiting for me to go cheaper and I said " Oh, ok. SWhen he goes bust I'll do it for the agreed price." With that I put the phone down!

You are at the mercy of all your customers and there`s nothing you can do about it if they want to change more fool them,a customer told me this week that recessions are not all bad they show up the dross among companys.Be confident in that you do a good job and will continue to do so during these times and it will rub off on the customer, give the impression that your worried and people will smell it carry on and enjoy everyday it might be your last, losing the odd customer is not the end of the world the worlds full of glass. ;)
