I know this question has been asked before but with banks trying to get our business' things may have changed!

I currently use a personel account but my bank (Lloydstsb) phoned me today and said I must change over to a fee paying business account. I know Alliance and Leicester do free biz banking but as they are not in my town it would be a bit of a pain!
Anyone know of another bank that does free banking or good deals?

I use a personal account; no charges; and pay my cheques into a sub-branch of the Halifax.

They're great; I don't have a book to fill in; I can just give them a big wadge of cheques and they process them then and there.

I always give the 'girls' who work there a tin of quality street and wine at Christmas; because they're so friendly; even though I know I'm a pain in the ass for them.

If you've got a Halifax branch; try them; I think our Moderater, Ian Giles, openend an account at my branch after I told him how great the 'girls' are.

Alliance and Leicester Commercial Bank
is not the same as normal Alliance and Leicester Banks.
The Banks will not take your payments.
You have to use a Post Office and pay-in with envelopes.
I transferred to them from a Barclays Business A/C
and I cannot fault them.
It does take a day longer than most banks for cheques to clear
but you do get interest on a credit balance.
NO FEES- NO FEES-NO FEES.
Some are happy to give their bank £70 a month.
No thanks these will do nicely.

If you need reference numbers for incoming BACS payments, forget Abbey as they don't show them.  Abbey is free up to a certain number of cheques etc., and you can bank out of hours via cashpoint.  However, that is little use if you really heavily on incoming BACS payments and they won't tell you who has paid.
I'm trying to get an account with Co-op via my FSB membership.  The membership fee insures you against the accountancy fees of a tax investigation and is worth the money for that alone.  You can also get free Co-op banking if you're a member.  Not many Co-op branches about so the Post Office is an agent.  You can nominate up to four post offices.  I will be nominating ones in the areas where I work (and hoping that the don't close down).  Also, Co-op apparently do show BACS refs on the web.

You do not have to nominate any Post Offices
They all accept they pay-in envelopes.
No brainer for me!
