Ive a company who seem above board guaranteeing me first page of google for £99 a month.
How do they do this and is it worth while.

I paid that with Thomsons last year and I do come up number 1 for cc in my area.
Depends who it is offering you it.

Hi Mark,
The "usual" way for doing this is to place you in a category i.e. carpet cleaners in (your area/city). next there will be a map of your area showing a list of 1-9 carpet cleaning companies.
The other way is to put you on a pay per click programme where you are sponsored on the right hand side of Google.
I would look for a company that can help raise your rankings in Google by back links etc. That way you will appear higher in the natural listings rather than artificialy placed.
There are others on this site more qualified to explain it, or even worth attending the CCDO the subject will probably come under discussion there!
Regards
Gary

Mark
I just paid a one off fee of £200 for my new site and it is now page 1, number 1 for carpet, upholstery, sofa, suite and leather cleaning - all on natural listings, all after just a month of being live.
My original site only cost £250 - don't pay anyone stupid money, speak to Kev Loomes, Mark Roberts or Goron Knight.

its a con, well not a con, but its cheaper to go through google and pay per click, what they do is use sponsored links (PPC)but only a few key phrases, so when you type in your key phrases, there you are, they absorb your click through costs cos with only a few keyphrases it won't get many clicks.
i questioned them for a laugh and they said....
you get 10 key phrases and your garaunteed top spot. all for £99
i said
well ive got over a 1000 key phrases and i get top spot for around £70 a month.
they left it there.

Sounds like something I made the mistake of taking on last year. A sponsored link, showing and highlighting my website at the top of the first page, covered by several search words/phrases. I cancelled after getting nothing from it after 3 months. Cost £100.. plus vat per month.

I paid £99 (+ activation fee) to Lavora Marketing to be on the first page of Google, and didn't get 1 enquiry !! Mind you, it was in December. Maybe it was the wrong time of the year. I have found that if you register with enough of the free directory services, you end up on the first page anyway. It also helps to use the correct 'meta-tags' on your website.
Won't be wasting my money on this again.

Sometimes it's easy to get no1 position. depends what keyword you use and the competition for it. It's very possible to be no1 for a key phrase and have no traffic at all. The only guarantee there is you will get no calls.

Clinton,
I think Mike is right up to a point, it's just the no calls I disagree with.
I just Googled "Carpet cleaner in Cheshire" , you are very well positioned at No. 2 or 3 for that search term. It all depends on the search term the searcher inputs into the google box. If you want business in say Nantwich, you would go for a domain name with the keyword "Nantwich" in it i.e. " Carpet Cleaner In Nantwich". You are doing o.k. don't fret about it, just buy domain names that relate to any area in which you wish to get work, and point that domain to your main site. Just include on your main site all of the areas in which you will accept work. You do not have to have a separate website for each domain name, just the one site.

What do you mean with no calls
What I mean is some keyword phrases may give you no1 position easily, but there is 0 peopel searching for it so you ain't gonna get any calls. CC cheshire will have traffic but you will also have competition which you have to compete with.
It's all very well having a domain name the search term you want to optimise as well as the tags, content etc. but ultimately it's how many backlinks you get and that will be up to you.
Another worrying thing I have noticed is I don't think reciprocal links have as much weight as they used too. So if you built up your links this way you could be in trouble if your comp is doing something else to get BLs that has more authority.

It is daunting at first but you can chip away at the knowledge, just a little bit each day and it gets easier once you know the basics.
I'm sure Kev will get you going and then you just need to know how to get backlinks.
