The ones from Gardners are just too small for my needs, A bigger ball gives more protection and stops the hose going passed the guides on the reel.
I know most guys use them on their pole hose, but I think that the female connector on the main hose is the one in need of most protection.

I use protecta balls on both the pole hose connector and the microbore female connector.  As you say, this provides needed protection.  We also supply protecta balls in Jumbo size as pictured below:

Alex, a cable tie placed behind the ball will stop it sliding up the hose, don't cut it too short though, leave an inch sticking out.
