Are modular poles any good for employers?
« on: March 03, 2009, 05:57:50 pm »
Hi.

I am looking to buy a few 50ft plus poles.

I employ so the poles do get a bit of stick. Would any of you good folks say that the SL2 type poles are durable enough to stand the normal day to day battering that employees would give them?  I would like to buy very light poles like the SL2 but I am very aware of handing them over to my guys who are good workers in the main but don't look after kit like a sole trader would.

Do you think I would be faced with buying replacement sections etc all the time?

Thanks.

Dan

it depends how much the pole gets used but i think for employing a telescopic is better. i think the SL2 is a fantastic pole but the sections do get thrown about and i have had 2 replaced sections in about 7 months of owning the pole

DB,

How about getting SL2s for your highest work; keep them for 'best' and use DIY fishing poles for your routine lower level stuff.

I don't look after my kit the best, but these DIY poles give me no problems and I've been using them about five months now.

I am thinking along those lines already Tosh.  I won't be giving the guys modular for low level work. By far my biggest ongoing expenditure is on replacement poles despite every effort to reduce it it's mainly down to lack of care. I understand it from the guy's point of view. They work hard and fast and faffing about isn't their style. For longevity I've found the Brodex 18 footer ali ones to be very good. It would be an ideal world to hand out ultra light poles for every job we do but I know for a fact that I would be replacing far too often with DIY fishing poles. I would need to employ someone just to keep up with making and repairing them. Thanks for the input though it's appreciated.

Out of interest what is the highest you can go with an SL2?  If less than 50ft as standard can sections be added to make it longer? Anyone know?

Thanks

The standard poles go up to a 56ft package which will reach 60ft.

Why not give employees cheap poles but tell them they can buy their own lighter or better quality poles themselves then they will have to look after them as they own their own poles
Its just the same as any other tradesman having their own tools

Not yet, there is a massive demmand but you will have to wait for an ironclad  third generation pole.
