Does anyone clean tiled roofs?
« on: March 02, 2009, 07:12:52 am »
I've had a few custies ask if I do or know anyone that provides this service. The roofs in question are normally caked up with moss etc. So I would imagine if there was a suitable way of doing this there would deffinatly be a call for this service. Though I'm not quite sure whether or not a window cleaner would be the right man for the job. What do you think?

i do this kind of work aswell as cleaning windows.

Its not an easy or safe job! there are a few ways of doing it:

1. scrape the roof. with a stiff brush, trowel, hoe or something  else similar.
2. spray the roof with something - there are loads of things out there - im just not convinced on this method.
3. The only 100% effective method - power wash the roof!

Hi, big business over here, mate of mine binned window cleaning and went full time into roof cleaning. Didn't take him long to get enough custies. He tells me it's alot easier than windows and would never go back. He had to invest in a bigger van and as far as I know some special ladders and a very good pressure washer with a few attachments. Also, he employs at least 1 guy full time and from what I can remember he said you can't do it alone. That's about all I know about it.

it certainly is big business, and a quicker way to make a profit if you work hard.

But for those of you on here who love WFP for the safety it gives - then forget cleaning roofs. unless someone has invented something i havent come across yet, cleaning roofs is very dangerous. you are up on the roof for a long period, standing on a roofing ladder. you are very exposed and its a long way down!

I seen a few roofers on the street i was cleaning the other day and they made every stupid ladder move i have ever made look like a model of safety, how anyone can claim ladders are not allowed for window cleaning is mad, these guys are just walking onto the highest part of the house completely free, no safety ropes etc, just wandering about on wet tiles... not for me thanks!! I know 2 people who have died fixing aerials because they fell from the roof!

i do this kind of work now and then if you use a cat ladder it is perfectly safe , once up on roof for extra safety you can attach a rope round chimney and fasten to a harness with a fall arrester, i use a powerwasher with a short lance and a 12 inch flat surface cleaner attached to the end this prevents fireing water under the tiles which can occur with a normal nozzle if your not careful.
sometimes the hardest part about the job is cleaning up afterwards as all the gutters end up full of moss so need cleaning dirt also ends up down walls on windows and paths etc so time has to be aloud to rinse all these areas also.
as for price of a 3 bed semi approximately about  £200--£250
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

Didn't expect it to be as difficult as everyone is saying on here. I thought there may have been something similar to the gutter vac on the market. Maybe there will be something like that out soon who knows.
