I'm Toooooo Soft
« on: February 12, 2009, 10:06:19 pm »
Did an elderly frail lady today, which was £10. She has a carer (who was there today)and is obviously being looked after frequently. She came to the door and said " You have done such a good job darling, my windows were filthy, here take another £5", and went to hand me £15. I said no ,thats ok love, the price was £10, keep it yourself (obviously a pensioner), I'm happy with the £10, see you next month.

My good deed for the day, or just a big 'ole softy...lol

I felt better for it tho.., could easily be my mum one day....and don't like to take advantage  :) ;)
If Carlsberg made window cleaners....I'd be one of them....lol

IDIOT!

I would have taken the money - then gave it to my mother, look after family first.

You did what you thought was best. That's not soft!  :)

Nice one fella...it always make me smile when I hear stories like this, I agree with the others that it will make her feel special and keep you on month after month and recommend you to others so that £5 will be returned 10 fold - Karma is king :-)

I would have taken the £5 and thanked her profusely. Tipping the window cleaner would have given her a feel-good factor for the rest of the day and who am I to deprive an old lady of a small pleasure?

I nearly got into a tiff with one of my custies.. she said id done such a good job, doing a 3 story inside and out, she wanted to pay extra as i had under charged her for the extra hour i was there..
.. i didn;t mind doing the extra hour free as i was going home cos it was absolutely peeing it down, so the rest of the day would have been a wash out anyway, so i was just taking my time..

I said no so many times, but she insisted and was basically pushing the money at me.. i eventually took the extra money.. but i was happy not too... although every penny helps :P

I always accept extra money from old ladies if they offer - i always ask if they are sure, and not living themselves short..i dont always charge them the right price anyway.. some times they ask if i can come in and clean the inside of the kitchen and living room windows - which i will do for free if im not in a rush.. so that tip helps pay for the internal when i dont ask for anything more.

I have learned that working for old biddies can be hazardous to my wealth, so I try to stay clear. Many of the old ladies I have worked for seem to ask for a little bit more each time I go, after six months a ten pound job will have worked into an hour of little extras.

Beware the sweet old lady, she is a wolf in sheeps clothing :D
if it is dirty it is fair game

That's a bit of a callous attitude, but not far from the mark in some respects.  I used to have one extremely fragile elderly lady who was both deaf and almost blind.  Her husband was totally blind.

He died and she was depressed, so much so that she never bothered to dress and one afternoon when I cleaned her windows I found her in a really sorry state.  Still in her dressing gown; she really needed looking after.

She asked me to help her find her hearing aid, which I did for almost an hour; then after I'd hunted everywhere for it she found it in her dressing gown pocket!

I ended up asking for and getting her daughters phone number and phoned her at work to let her know the state her Mother was in.

We're window cleaners, not social workers, but sometimes...

One has to ask - why did she have the windows cleaned if the pair of them couldn't see?
I hope you didn't scrimp on the detailing there Tosh.

I have had some give me their purse and ask me to take the money. I always feel a bit uneasy with this and make sure they can see what I'm taking, not got any blind ones at the moment, just crippled arthritic ones.
