Hi all,

I was curious as to what systems others employ to monitor the location of their equipment if stored on a clients premises, hoovers, floor scrubbers mop buckets etc. I include a breakdown of what equipment will be left on site as  part of the quotation , i have also started marking equipment with the usual property of my company. Has anyone ever had disputes when terminating a contract about ownership of such items.

Mind you, we have never had a problem with Clients.

The problem with tracking assets is that when you get quite big a Supervisor (or yourself) will move a piece of equipment from one site to another in an emergency without recording it. After a while you will lose track of what is where.

Computerised asset tracking is useful for keeping on top of PAT testing, planned maintenance etc. as well as just recording an inventory.

I'm surprised nobody has though of GPRS tracking systems for equipment (sounds daft I know) but if it is an expensive piece of machinery, why not? I have no idea how much your equipment costs but you larger businesses probably have quite a few items of machinery totalling thousands of pounds and besides we do it for cars etc. What's the difference between losing a car cos someone has stolen it and losing track of a piece of machinery cos someone has moved it??

Why not use a similar type of id marking such as Datatagging or Smartwater ?
These are used for motorcycles and i cant think of a reason why it could'nt be applied to cleaning equipment. Do you ?
 What do you reckon ?
 Or have i just given someone an excellent marketing idea ?

GPS tracking is available for equipment, and advertised as such. However due to cost its predominantly aimed at the most expensive equipment such as the ride on's etc and the irony of course is that these are items you are less likely to forget where you put them or are meant to remain mobile.

I guess this type of tracking is aimed at theft more then anything else. However small asset tracking would by far be the more useful and even CMS 's manual system at £1,700 would prove expensive to a small company.

Like all things, you can have anything - if you can afford it.
