just a thought !!! but will the use of a magnet on button back sofas etc. detect
 wether they are metal or not ?,or are there likely to be flaws in this assuption?
 I now use a magnet and if i discover they are metal ,wrap in foil when cleaning, so to avoid the possibility of rust.
now i know some may say , if the suite is dried immediatly this shouldnt be a problem , but i feel that its better to err on the side of caution .
 Now , back to my initial question , do any of you have fool proof answer

Why not try one of those cheap detectors for finding wiring/studwork in walls.

Dave  ........... of course i clean the buttons its exactly the same as i would
clean the valences surrounding the suite, if i suspect the inner is made of of cardboard or the like!!

No Im not, it was just you saying you wrap them in foil. What I do is, clean as normal over the button as well, then dab them with white kitchen roll to absorb as much moisture as possible and if I feel it neccesary leave a little tab of kitchen roll behind each button, to be removed when the back is dry. Dont be alarmed at my question Geof, and Im not suggesting you are anything but professional, but,  you might be surprised just what areas of a suite some CCs regularly miss out altogether. Carpets too, like the two guys in partnership I came across a couple of years ago on a course, who were astounded that the rest of us bothered to clean the riser part of stairs, as they admitted they didnt.

Dave wasnt at all alarmed,  some times my responces may indicate a touch of sarcasum, after all i have been groomed in Mike Halliday territory and I can see why you asked ,
  I myself  towel the buttons using m/s ,along with all the other nooks and crannies, that are just about impossible to get at with a tool.
 Paul with ref. to cardboard, some of the materials used for the stiffness in
the valences are indeed on par with cardboard, and quite literaly curl up dramaticly when wet. i always explain situation to customer that i will not be h/w/e , but towel again using m/s,  the results are usualy acceptable

Geoff, if you dry the suite before you leave then rust should'nt be a problem, but the cardboard in valences is something to be weary of, I find it can curl up when overly wet.

Ps we're in Palm Springs for a few days, did'nt know that easter weekend is the worlds biggest get-together in Palm springs for gays & lesbians. the only room we could get was in a hotel with a big 'white party' its brilliant!!
